The Alice Vanessa Fisher Story
On July 25, 1958, Alice Vanessa was born to Annette Hill and Jimmie Earl Stevenson in Clinton, Oklahoma.
When Alice Vanessa was a young girl her mother married Lathon Archie and they moved to Frederick, Oklahoma.
As the 2nd oldest of Annette's children (Chiffon Ann, Alice Vanessa, Lathon and Eddie) the eldest daughter of Jimmie Earl (Tommy Earl, Alice Vanessa, Audria Dormain) Alice Vanessa always had an independent spirit. At an early age she had entrepreneur mind set. By 8 years of age, she had a successful business selling a variety of seeds. With business booming and more money than an 8yrs old could comprehend, Alice Vanessa would become a regular at Mr. Marshall's and Miss Hicks candy stores. She stayed stocked up on orange sodas, moon pies, chik-o-sticks, peanut patties, cookies and penny candy.
Along with her siblings, Alice Vanessa attended Frederick High school in Frederick, Oklahoma where she became apart of Oklahoma history as the first black (football) Homecoming Queen.
While attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University she met and married the love of her life Bruce Maloy Fisher and they conceived the youngest of Bruce's children and Alice Vanessa's one and only Starlet (Starr) Fisher.
Alice Vanessa lived a spirit filled life. She and her siblings were raised as a "preacher's kids" so it was only natural that she would be drawn to the ministry as a youth minister for Christ United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City and the children's ministry at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma combined 25+ years.
Alice Vanessa loved Muskogee and has always been active in the community. She was a member and sang on the praise team at Faith Deliverance Christian Center, enjoyed working at the historic Roxy Theater and at the recommendation of her friend and Executive Director Cassandra Gaines, Alice Vanessa was on the Board for the Oklahoma Landmark Conference, Multicultural/Tourism committee, Judges Co-Ordinatior for the National Soul Food Cook Off and the Black Towns Tour Committee.
She served as the Muskogee NAACP Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) and Director of NAACP Youth and College Director. Under her direction the Muskogee chapter competed and won medals at the National ACT-SO competition and the Muskogee NAACP saw record numbers in youth/college memberships.
Coming from a family of singers, songwriters and musicians inspired her to create a program called 'Women Who Sing Gospel'. It was a collaborative group of talented young ladies and women from various walks of life with inspirational stories of triumph told through singing, poetry and dance.
With so many titles under her belt- Daughter, Sister, Wife, Aunt, Youth Minister, Servant,  Community Leader, Director, Intercessor and proud Mother of Miss Black Oklahoma, Alice didn't realize the best was yet to come when she was blessed with her most favorite title "Lolli". When her granddaughter Honour Rose was born she thanked God daily that he had thought highly enough of her to bless her with "Yum Yum".
A Woman whose faith never wavered, who could quote a scripture for any occasion and earned the nick name "Scriptoria", who could get a prayer through, who could get a prophetic word from the Lord, always celebrated others, had the heart of a servant and the strength of a Warrior... this one is for you!
My mom always found ways to support, educate and encourage others especially young people. Her Juneteenth Young Entrepreneurs Symposium was a forum for business owners ages 5-18 to launch, engage or expand their businesses. Her 5yrs old granddaughter Honour Rose is owner of the Tootzie Pop Shoppe and was apart of the Symposium. She wanted nothing more than for her only grandchild to be set up for success. So in lieu of flowers for Alice Vanessa Fisher, I am requesting donations to the Greenwood Youth Entrepreneurship Academy whose mission is to train young entrepreneurs like her granddaughter Honour Rose. All donations will be matched.
