LIFE'S WALK……..
Alonzo Edwards, Sr. was born to Bertha and Floyd Edwards in 1944. Unfortunately, his father died when he was only four years old. His mom raised him, along with his 8 sisters and 3 brothers. Alonzo attended Dunbar Elementary School, Carver Middle School and Booker T. Washington High School.
From the very beginning Alonzo excelled in sports. He began playing football in the 6th grade. Alonzo also began playing baseball and boxed in the 7th grade. Although he always started in football and was an excellent boxer he was expected to play professional baseball. Coaches believed that he was the best baseball player they had ever seen. Football and wrestling would prove to be what he loved. As a high school senior at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma Alonzo Edwards was one of the greatest athletes to graduate. Alonzo won unique athletic honors especially his last year of competition. His coaches were quoted as saying "He is a fine athlete!" His accolades included: Oklahoma's Finest High School Linesman, Oklahoma State Champion Wrestler, Wrestling on an all-star wrestling team in Japan, he was also an undefeated wrestling champ.
As a football player Alonzo won a most impressive list of titles. He was the unanimous choice of city coaches for All-City honors. In August of 1962 he made a trip to Japan with an all-star high school team of wrestlers and won eight bouts. After returning to Oklahoma, he played in the North-South game and was named outstanding linesman of the game. A week later when Oklahoma all-stars met Texas all-stars, Oklahoma won with Alonzo receiving the most valuable linesman honor. He was also inducted into the Edison High School Athletic Hall of Fame and inducted into the Oklahoma State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Alonzo was a great competitor.
After high school Alonzo Edwards attended Northeastern Junior College and won Wrestling Nationals. He was also All-American in Football. After Junior college he attended Arizona State University. He then married his high school sweet heart Dorothy Whitney. They were married for over 20 years had seven beautiful children. Alonzo Edwards worked for many years as a welder for Shellfield Steel. As an employee he was awarded Alonzo for his excellence at his craft and noted that he was the very best they had. He retired in 1990.
Alonzo, Sr. often spoke of his love for God. He attended church at Victory Christian Center. And was a former member of Full Gospel Outreach Ministries and a former active Jehovah's Witness. Alonzo was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. Because of his love of sports especially football and wrestling, he coached for many years.
On January 15, 2016 in Tulsa, Oklahoma Mr. Alonzo C. Edwards, Sr. finished his Race, and Closed His Eyes. He was preceded in death by his paternal parents, Price and Bertha Edwards, his son Alonzo Edwards, Jr., great-grand son Brenton Phillips, brother Floyd Edwards, Jr., brother Melvin Edwards, brother Manuel People, sister Alberta Gush, sister Rosie Brown, all eight of his father's brothers and sister, and his mother's two sisters.
Alonzo Edwards, Sr., leaves to uphold his legacy and cherish many wonderful memories: his ex-wife Dorothy Edwards, seven beautiful children that he was very proud of and loved dearly Chon Booker-Tulsa, Bridgette Whittaker-Tulsa, Nichol Edwards-Silver Springs, MD, Eric Edwards - Tulsa, Alondo Edwards (Kirby) - Tulsa, and Orlando Edwards– Tulsa. Along with two other children: LaKeshu N. "Kandy" Whitley-White-Tulsa and Alana Edwards-Atlanta, GA.
The HomeGoing Celebration for Mr. Alonzo C. Edwards, Sr. will be Tuesday January 26, 2016 at 11AM inside Biglow's All Faiths Chapel in Tulsa.
Friends may visit Mr. Edwards on Monday from 1PM until 7PM in Tulsa.
Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens in Skiatook, Oklahoma.
