Obituary

Ms. Altha Faye Fields, (maiden name Cato), passed from This Life on August 15, 2020 in Wichita, Kansas.

Altha Fay Cato Fields was born November 14, 1925 to Theodore R. and Ethel L. Jones Cato in Luther, OK. Fay was the oldest of 15 children.

In December 1925, shortly after her birth, her parents moved back to the rural area of Mount Vernon and Vernon, OK. She grew up there and received her education through the Mount Vernon school system.

At an early age, Altha Fay accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized, becoming a member of the Walker Chapel A.M.E. Church, Vernon, OK. After she left home and moved in the area of Haskell, OK, she united with the Wilson Chapel Church, later First Baptist Church, Taft, OK. She sung in the choir and served in other axillaries in the church.

Altha Fay's first husband was Eugene Henderson and she later married Moses Fields Jr. She was the proud mother of four children, Gloria Henderson, Melvin Joe Fields Sr., Paul Louis Fields and Maria Netta Fields Bias.

After settling in the farm life in the areas of Haskell and Taft, OK, with her husband Moses, Altha Fay's attitude always reflected that of a virtuous woman with an independent nature. She worked diligently to help provide for their family. Apart from her house work and taking care of her children, Altha Fay was a gardener in which she loved to grow her flowers, she loved canning, she was a seamstress, worked in the field, and helped with the stock her husband raised. She was also, a business lady. She taught her daughter Maria how to prepare her own taxes. Her last job outside of the home, which she retired from after ten years, was at the Haskell Nursing Home where she served as a cook and housekeeper.

Once when Maria asked her mother when she was coming to Wichita to live with her, she replied, "We will cross that bridge when we get to it." In February 2013, the time came for Altha Fay to cross that bridge and leave her home in Taft, OK to go live with Maria and her husband James in Wichita, KS. After her move, she united with their church, Holy Savior Catholic Church.

Altha Fay decided as a child who she wanted to live with when her earthly stay ended. Therefore, when God got ready for her to make her final move, she crossed that bridge at the break of dawn on Saturday, August 15, 2020. Oh happy she must have felt when she looked and saw Jesus standing on that bridge, reflecting the Jordan River, waiting to help her cross and welcome her into her eternal home.

Those she has joined across that final bridge are: Her husband Moses Fields Jr., son Paul Louis Fields, daughter Gloria Henderson, great-granddaughter Ashonte Fields, Parents, sisters: Rosa Lee Cato, Cynthia Mitchell, Nadine Tyson, Anice Alexander, Beatrice Grant and Shirley Rhodes, her brothers: Ralph Cato Sr., Arthur Cato Sr., Verdis Cato Sr. and Clifford (Sonny) Cato.

Altha Fay leaves to cherish her legacy: one son Melvin Fields Sr. (Melba), one daughter Maria Bias (James), grandchildren: Melvin Fields Jr. (Tamela), Melody Moore (William Jr.), Maya Blount (Alan), M.J. Fields, Melnie Rothad (Stephan), Tamason Richardson (Irvin), Lydell Bias, Stacy Bias (Misty), Victor Bias (Danielle), sixteen great grandchildren, brothers: Robert Cato (Liza), Bennie Cato (Angela), sisters: Wyona Bowie, Effie Guyton and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Interment will be Monday August 24, 2020 at 11AM at Taft Cemetery in Taft, Oklahoma.
