Obituary

Ann "Lois" Brock, a Muskogee resident since 1996, passed from this life on Saturday May 13, 2006 and joined her sister with whom she lived Azell Smith ,who died on May 4th, in their heavenly home.

Ann Lois was born May 22, 1927 to Andrew and Alberta Williams in Idabel, Oklahoma. She began her schooling there and completed the final grade and graduated at age 15. Ann Lois was married at the age of 17 to a soldier in the Army Air Force, P.J. Smith. A son , Ronald J. Smith was born in 1945 to the union.

The family lived in the San Diego, California area where over the next 23 years she worked many jobs to support her son. This marriage was later dissolved and she married Horace Brock who preceded her in death.

In 1953 Lois was one of 155 chosen in President Kennedy's first program for "Upward Mobility" - Manpower Development Training Act." It was hand up - not a hand out program and Lois never looked back. She became a Licensed Vocational Nurse through San Diego's Mesa College. Over the years she attended University of California - San Diego, where she studied Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.; at UC Los Angeles, she was involved in study of programs for the mentally retarded; Long Beach City College; and at Crafton Hills College she majored in Psychology. Lois challenged the Board and completed the four hour test in less than two hours and became a licensed Psychiatric Technician. She worked four years at San Diego Detox as the pm charge. When she moved to San Bernardino, the San Diego program director recommended her for the AA/NA Coordinator position at San Bernardino. Lois also developed and taught a program on sexual assaults for staff at the Patton State Hospital .

After moving to Muskogee in 1996 with her sister Azell, to care for their aging aunt, she obtained her LPN. She felt lost but soon found a job as charge nurse with the DOC jail clinic. Following an injury she retired and later volunteered with the probation department.

Ann Lois was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Muskogee which she "loved with all her heart." She was currently serving as an Elder of the church and was on the Mission Interpretation Committee and was active in the Women's Association. Ann Lois with her sister Azell began a program called "Friends Outside" and worked with families of incarcerated clients as well as the newly released. They had a hunger program from their home, sending foods to Katrina victims . They worked with the MCM food pantry at the church when needed. They started the "Community Partners "program for the church with Albertson's. as well as coordinated the box top and coupon programs to bring needed services to various mission programs. Lois had been a member of Impact Presbyterian Church , Calif. where she served as Deacon and Elder. She also participated in Volunteers of America, the NAACP, and Habitat for Humanity in Muskogee.

Ann Lois is survived by her son Ronald J. Smith, granddaughters Lydia Smith of Muskogee, Ann and husband Hugo Sandez and C.C and husband Truman Barrett of California. Grandchildren Hugo Smith Sandez and Dominique Smith Barrett. One nephew, Marcus Ray Smith, Jr; nieces Gwendolyn, Kathy, Julia, and Ester. Adopted in love, daughters Cecilia B Smith and Erma Demmer of California and Brenda White and Marilyn Randall Stout of Muskogee.

A memorial service with Rev. Ann Brizendine officiating will be held at the church, 500 West Broadway at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 18th. Biglow Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
