Obituary

It all began in Boley, Oklahoma on the 9th day of October, 1932 when Armetha Gwendolyn was born to George and Mazell [Crittenden] Gissendaner.

Her parents moved to Idabel, Oklahoma in 1936, where she attended grade school at Slater and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School of Idabel.


After school, she married a classmate, Alfred Carpenter, Jr., and their union produced two sons, Robert Michael and Steve Durell Carpenter. In 1990, she married Herman Franklin. They remained married for sixteen years before his death.


Armetha worked for Dillards Department Storee, Continental Insurance Company and retired from the Department of Public Safety in 1997. Mrs. Franklin was a member of Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where she served the Lord as an Usher and a member of the W. M. U. She was also a member of the Bass Bagger Camping Club and secretary of the Booker T. Washington Alumni Chapter in Oklahoma City for two years.


In her 77th season, Armetha Gwendolyn Franklin, with her loving family by her side, dozed into the peaceful slumber of eternal rest. She was preceded in death by her parents, an older brother, Lonnie, and her husband, Herman Franklin.


She leaves to lament her death and cherish her memories; her sons, Robert Michael Carpenter [Marilyn], Denver, Colorado and Steve Durell Carpenter [Linda], Oklahoma City; a sister, Zedora Smith, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a brother, Waymon Gissendaner, Edmond, Oklahoma; a step-daughter, Gwendolyn McKee, San Francisco, California; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; along with other relatives, church family and friends.

The final hour with Mrs. Franklin will commence on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 3721 Staton Drive, Oklahoma City. Reverend K. Jerome Free, Senior Pastor, will Preside.

Burial will follow in Arlington Memorial Gardens, Midwest City, Oklahoma.

For convenience, you may visit Armetha, as she slumbers in Oklahoma City at the McKay-Davis Mortuary, Inc., 1616 NE 36th on Wednesday from 12 Noon to 7 PM, and at the church prior to the start of the service.
