On January 8, 1935 in Pineville, Arkansas, a bouncing bundle of joy was delivered to Lee Green and Mariah Robinson Green. They named her Beatrice. She was baptized at True Vine Baptist Church in Alexandria, Louisiana at an early age by Rev. E.C. Curtis. As a child, she and her sisters were known as the "Green Sisters" and sang their way to many churches in the area. Although not the only African-Americans to sing at a prison, they were the first African-Americans sponsored by Coca-Cola to integrate the local radio station KALB by singing on the air every Sunday.
In 1961, Beatrice married Reverend G. Martin Alsay of Tulsa. This union produced 3 children, Charamonte, Byron who preceded Mrs. Alsay in death, and Rev. Joseph C. Alsay. Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and devoted teacher passed from this life August 30, 2008 in Tulsa. Beatrice graduated from Grambling State University with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, and Early Childhood Education. She also received a Harold Washington College Certificate III, and Kennedy-King College III. She would begin her 48 year Elementary Education career teaching 2 years in Louisiana, and 18 years in Chicago before moving to Oklahoma. In Tulsa she taught Kindegarten for 8 years at Owen Elementary and for 20 years at Burroughs. She was also a Special Education Counselor at Northeastern State in 1993. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where her son is Assistant Pastor. She received numerous awards including Teacher of the Year for 2003-2004.
Preceding Mrs. Alsay in death was her parents, husband, and a sister, Irma Jean Newton. Remaining to cherish her precious memories; her two children: Charamonte Oladeji (Dapo), Chicago, IL., and Rev. Joseph C. Alsay (Cecelia), Tulsa, OK., 6 grandchildren Lasun, Fola, and Lolamide Oladeji, Corinthia Gray, Zoe, and Zipporah Alsay., a sister, Virgie and husband Rev. Joseph Johnson. A fund has been set up for Retired teachers in honor of Beatrice Alsay at Saint Simeon's Foundation at 3701 North Cincinnati Tulsa, OK 74106.
Services for Mrs. Alsay will be Friday September 5, 2008 at 1PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, downtown Tulsa at 5th and Cincinnati. Visitation will be Thursday from 12Noon to 7PM at the funeral home in Tulsa.
