Bettie Lou Stevenson Grieg was born Friday, July 21, 1950, in Boynton, Oklahoma, to Alex Bates and Johnetta (Smith) Bates.
Bettie accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Boynton, Oklahoma. She later became a member of Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and served on the Usher Board.
Bettie received her formal education at Dunbar Elementary, Sadler Junior High, and Manual Training High School. She was a member of the Manual Training High School Band, where she played the clarinet and graduated in the Spring of 1968.
After high school, Bettie moved to California and then to St. Louis before returning home to Oklahoma. On January 23, 1979, her son, Brian, was born.
Bettie began her working career at Jess Dunn Correctional Facility in Taft, Oklahoma, working in the canteen, where she was called "Cashier" by all who knew her. She met her late husband, Herman Stevenson, Sr., there. The two were married in November 1980; to this union, Nichole was born. Bettie was also blessed with a stepson, Herman, Jr.
Bettie attended Northeastern State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work in 1995. Also, while progressing towards her degree, she worked at Dillard's at the Fashion Fair counter and later at the Oklahoma School for the Blind. In 1996, Bettie went to work for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services as a Social Worker, beginning as an intake specialist and later working with the therapeutic foster care population, in which she positively impacted the hindered within her community and across the state. She retired from DHS on August 5, 2011.
Bettie met and married the love of her life, Russell Greig, on Christmas Eve, December 24th, 2015; to this union, Bettie gained a stepdaughter, Kamillah (Chris), and two grandsons, Zion and Xavier.
Bettie received her wings on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. Bettie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, George Staton, and her late husband, Herman Stevenson, Sr.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her husband, Russell Greig; her son, Brian Stevenson; her daughter, Nichole Stevenson-Hurst; her grandsons, Jaylon Crawford, O'Shea Stevenson, Courtland Hurst, Jr., O'Marii Stevenson, Jordan Stevenson, James Stevenson, Zion Taylor, and Zaxier Taylor; her granddaughters, Alayah Hurst and Amaya Stevenson; her sister, Sandra McNac; her brother, Ronald Bates; a special niece Shelly (Harold ) Achong; a special sister-in-law, LaVerne (Velma) Stevenson; special friends Theressa Buckmaster and Stephanie Abbott; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
You may visit Bettie, as she slumbers in sweet repose at the funeral home on Friday, July 30, 2021 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM.
Her service will be on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 2:00 PM, in the most holy sanctuary of Harvest House Ministries located at 2200 E. Okmulgee in Muskogee.
Burial will follow in the Booker T. Washington Cemetery in Muskogee.
