Obituary

On March 22, 1924 in the county of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Bonnie Jean, the fourth child of Johnnie Myers and Mattie Roberts Myers, was born. Spending most of her life in the Muskogee area, she decided 2 and half years ago to relocate to Dallas, Texas to be closer to her immediate family. It was at her home in Dallas that she made her transition April 19, 2015.

At an early age she united with the Black Jack Baptist Church which her family helped to establish in 1867. Through the years she participated in many church auxiliaries and also served as church clerk. She remained a faithful and supportive member even after she moved to Dallas. Although she could no longer be actively involved with her church, she was always there in spirit. At the time of her death, she was the oldest and longest tenured member of the church.

She received her education through the Muskogee County Public School System and in 1943 graduated from Moton High School in Taft, Oklahoma. A year later she married Ellington Wilson, the love of her life at the time. They had known each other since childhood. In happier days she was his "sugar pudding" and he was her "honey". She often said that the greatest blessings of the marriage were the two daughters, Sandra Kay and Bonella, born of their union. A wonderful role model who taught by words and actions, she made many sacrifices to ensure that her girls had opportunities to develop into successful women in all areas of their lives. Their hearts overflow with gratitude and love for all she gave to them.

Not one to shy away from hard work, she had several jobs including one as a cook at a local restaurant. In 1963 she was able to gain employment as a receptionist/switchboard operator with the State of Oklahoma Department of Mental Health which had a facility in Taft. Two other state agencies would later have operations at the Taft site. Despite these changes, she continued in her position as a receptionist and after 25 years of service she retired from the State of Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Jess Dunn Center, in 1988. After retirement she spent several years caring for her elderly mother.

Devoted to her family and friends, she found it difficult to accept their generosity. Her greatest joy was in bringing joy to others. She shared her love and compassion with many others outside of her family, especially those who were homebound, in the hospital or nursing home. She thought every birthday and holiday should be celebrated by giving to her many friends and family greeting cards (she enriched Hallmark) or gifts which sometimes included her famous cherry cream pie. Her outgoing personality and wonderful smile filled many rooms with joy on special occasions, and her compassion soothed many suffering from loss and illness.

Her parents and three siblings, Fernanders Myers, Louis Myers, Sr. and Rosetta Vaughn Colbert predeceased her. Left behind to cherish and honor their memories of her are her two daughters Sandra Raye, Sacramento, California and Bonella Edison, Dallas, Texas and their husbands who she truly embraced as sons, Vance Raye and Robert Edison; four grandchildren, Harold Chris Edison, Louisville, Kentucky, Vanessa Raye (Kay Palmer) Atlanta, Georgia, Omeka Edison, Dallas, Texas and Lindah Edison, Dallas, Texas, four great-grandchildren, LaPreesha Edison, Tatiana Laury, Demarieh Wesley and D-Yonna Seargent, three sisters-in law, Ruth Jordan and Geraldine Cowan, Omaha, Nebraska, and Fanella Johnson, New Milford, Connecticut, and a host of other special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
