Mrs. Brenda Joyce Watson, in her 80th year, left this life on Thursday, September 23, 221 from Saint Louis, Missouri.
Brenda Reece was born the second of four children to Beatrice Harper Reece
and Thomas Reece, Jr., on April 2, 1941, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. As a child, she was
educated in the public schools of Muskogee, ultimately graduating from the Historic
Manual Training High School in 1959. For many years, Brenda was active in the
Marching Band playing the clarinet and later utilizing her skills as a Majorette, which
stemmed from the early age of 5.
Upon graduation from high school, Brenda attended Langston University for her
postsecondary education. She graduated in 1964 with a Bachelors degree in
Elementary Education. Brenda began her teaching career in Clearview, Oklahoma at
the elementary school level for a brief time, then transferred her talents to Dunbar
Elementary School in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where she taught for several years.
Brenda went on to obtain the Master of Education degree in Elementary Education as
well as the credentials for counseling grades K-12 from Northeastern Oklahoma State
University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
On December 26, 1964, Brenda married her college sweetheart, Cleovis
Watson, Jr. To this union, two sons were born, Cleovis Watson, III and Christopher
Andre Watson. The family resided in St. Louis, Missouri where Mrs. Watson taught at
Arlington Elementary School, was a Counselor at Columbia CEC Elementary School
and a High School Guidance Counselor at Roosevelt High School, and Soldan
International High School. Brenda was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated and Phi Delta Kappa International Educators Organization. She retired
from the St. Louis City Board of Education.
Brenda accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of her life at an early age
uniting with her parents at Antioch Baptist Church, and kept the faith. She sang in the
church youth choir as well as on the radio each Sunday with a select group.
On the morning of September 23, 2021, Brenda Watson heard and recognized the voice of the
Lord calling, and at that moment she moved from labor to her reward.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Cleovis Watson, Jr., her parents,
Beatrice and Thomas Reece, Jr., and her brothers, George Edward Reece and Walter
Thomas (W. T.) Reece.
Brenda Reece Watson leaves to celebrate her life two loving sons, Cleovis
Watson, III and wife, Angela, Guthrie, OK, and Christopher Andre Watson, St. Louis,
MO; one sister, Carolyn Reece Hickman and husband, Ernest, Middletown, OH; two
grandchildren, Jade Watson, Cushing, OK and Crystal Kelso, Ft. Worth, TX; three
great-grandchildren, Judah Lemon, Ava McLamb, Brydon McLamb, many nieces and
nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was a loving mother, sister,
grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She will be missed by all who knew
her.
Her services will be on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at 11:00 AM in the most holy sanctuary of the St. Mark Baptist Church. Reverend Rodger L.B. Cutler is the gracious host Pastor, and Reverend Hersey Hammonds, Officiating. Burial will follow in the Booker T. Washington Cemetery in Muskogee.
You may visit her, as she slumbers in sweet repose at the funeral home on Monday, between the hours of 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
