"Her Story"
In Wagoner, Oklahoma, a beautiful baby girl was born to Harvey Mills, Sr. and Myrtle Smith Mills on July 19, 1920. Affectionately referred to as "Cat," she was the sixth child out of seven children. She attended Rock Hill School. Mother loved to cook and dance and when she danced, she believed nobody could beat her. Her favorite dance was the jietter bug. After reaching adulthood, she met and married D.D. Booker. From that union, three children were born. The marriage later dissolved. She would later meet and marry a tall, handsome man named Woodrow Surratt, Sr. in 1945. Lovingly referring to him as "Wood," she thought it was no man like him. This union produced five children. Throughout her younger years, she was known for giving her nieces and nephews guidance. Mother loved and truly admired all of her children unconditionally. She also sacrificed for the family. Mother loved for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come around. Even though her health began to fail and during her sickness she always had a smile on her face.
On Wednesday October 12, 2011, in the comfort of her daughters' home, she was peacefully called Home. Mother was truly proud to carry the Surratt name. She was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow, her parents, Harvey and Myrtle Mills, four children and two siblings. She leaves to cherish her memories: two sons: Woodrow Surratt, Jr. (Mary), Tulsa, OK., and Herman Surratt (Keri), Wagoner, Oklahoma, three daughters: Mae Frances Bass (Jerry), Los Angeles, CA., Betty Surratt (Van Cox), Los Angeles, CA., and Shirley Surratt-Carter (Earnest), Tulsa, OK., 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services for Mrs. Surratt will be Friday October 21, 2011 at 12Noon at Greater Rayfield Baptist Church in Muskogee. Friends may visit her as she peacefully rests on Thursday in Tulsa, from 12Noon until 7PM.
