Obituary

Charlie Vernice McGee Marshall Davis was born May 13, 1919, in the community of Gay, Oklahoma located southwest of Hugo, to Charlie Walker McGee and Mary Francis (Buford) McGee. She attended primary school in Gay and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Hugo. She married Jimmie L. Marshall in 1938 and they made their home in Gay where their first two sons were born. In 1941, they moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where she gave birth to their third and fourth sons.

During these years she was primarily a mother and homemaker but later as the boys were all in school she started a career. She was the first black to work as a sales person at the Ford Drug Store in Lawton and made prescription drug deliveries in a Volkswagen Beetle. In the early 1960's she was the first black person hired to a sales position in the Sears, Roebuck's Lawton store. She worked in the house wares and men's & boys clothing departments for approximately 20 years and retired in 1981. She also worked as a volunteer in community organizations such as school PTA, the NAACP and a local civil rights organization called the "Group".

Upon reaching retirement she moved to Los Angeles, California and lived there for ten years. After moving to Los Angeles she was married briefly to Harold Davis, Sgt. Retired, United States Army. In L.A. she continued her work for several years at the Broadway Department Store, which is a part of the Dillard's chain. In 1991 when doctors advised against her standing long hours, she retired again. Upon this retirement, she decided to relocate back to Oklahoma but this time to Tulsa. She continued to live in Tulsa for the past nineteen years except for the year of 1997. She spent this joyous year living with her eldest grandson, Ron E. Marshall and his family in Spring, Texas.

Vernice accepted Christ at a young age and served in church throughout her life. In Lawton she was a member of the St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church for some forty years, serving on the Usher Board and Church Treasurer. In Los Angeles she was a member of the Word of God Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board. After moving to Tulsa, she was a member of the Victory Christian Center and was a volunteer for the church's telephone prayer request service. She loved church and attended faithfully. When she was not able to attend due to mobility issues, she continued at home by watching many of the television ministers and televangelists.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charlie W. McGee and Mary Francis McGee; three older siblings who passed as infants: Belzora McGee, Lula Mae McGee, and Thelma McGee; a sister Celester Petty; four younger brothers: Fred W. McGee, Calvin W. McGee, OB McGee and Herman E. McGee, an infant younger sister; former husbands: Jimmie L. Marshall and Harold Davis; and a son Carl L. Marshall. She is survived by three sons: Arnold J. Marshall (Pat), Austin, TX., Herbert E. Marshall, Meeker, OK., Roy E. Marshall, Tulsa, OK., three sisters: Vera M. Hughes, Rockville, MD., Lola D. Piper, Los Angeles, CA., Charlie M.
