Obituary

After One Hundred Four Years and One Hundred Nineteen days, Clemmie Hill, Sr., of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, passed away on March 30, 2016.

Clemmie was born in Idabel, Oklahoma on December 4, 1911 and in 1926, he moved with family to Okmulgee. He was married to Rose Mary Simms on December 10, 1930 and the two were married 57 years until her death June 5, 1987. From this union, four children were born; John H. Hill, and Willa Minter, both deceased and Clemmie Hill, Jr., and Rae Ann Wilson.

In 1935, the Hill family made their residence on East Boston Street, where they made a positive impact on their neighbors for many years. THEir home became the focal point for the entire neighborhood.

Brother Hill was a lifetime member of Cleaves Memorial C.M.E. Church, where he served as Chairman of both the Steward and Trustee Boards for many years. He was also a Class Leader and Sunday School Superintendent. Brother Hill Showed his love, loyalty and commitment to Cleaves through his years of dedicated service.

There were many social clubs active in the Okmulgee community during the 1950's and 1960's. Clemmie was a member of the 20th Century Club, which in addition to their social activities, provided scholarships to youth in the black community.

After retiring from the St. Gobain Factory in 1973, Clemmie volunteered, making weekly visits to Rebold, Highland Park and Leisure Manor nursing homes and George Nigh Rehab Center. He lovingly became known as "The Candy Man" for giving candy suckers to the patients. The Candy Man brought comfort and sweet treats to shut-ins and home bound individuals as well.

In 2010, Clemmie moved from East Boston Street to his home on Third Street and Highway 75, where he became a fixture, sitting on the front porch waving at passersby and enjoying the sights and sounds of the highway. He then moved in with his daughter and son-in-law on July 4, 2014.

Clemmie is preceded in death by his brother, LeeAtra, sister, Frances, his loving wife, Rose Mae, daughter, Willa, son John H., and granddaughter, Gwendoln.

Clemmie leaves in God's care; his son, Clemmie Hill, Jr. [Margie], Spencer, Oklahoma; his daughter, Rae Ann Wilson [Johnny Lee], Okmulgee, Oklahoma; his sister, Curlee Scott, Sacramento, California; his niece, Alluwee Coleman, Oakland, California; thirteen grandchildren, Stephen Willis [Gladys], Houston, Texas, Rena Evans [Larry], Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kenneth Hill, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Angela Asberry, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sharron Glover [Eugene], Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Janet Hill, Raleigh, North Carolina, Sheila Hill, Tulsa, Oklahoma, John Hill, Jr., Raleigh, North Carolina, Robbie Williams, Dallas, Texas, Joy Hill, Garland, Texas, Gina Eakers, Seattle, Washington, Alberta Behn [Mark], Okmulgee, Oklahoma and Yolanda Carter, Okmulgee, Oklahoma; thirty-six great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of other family and friends.

He was the epitome of a "Christian Gentleman" and he ended each day by reading from the book of John.

The Sacred Farewell for Mr. Hill will commence on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the most Holy sanctuary of the Cleaves Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Reverend Thomas Henderson, Pastor, will Preside.

Burial will follow in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Okmulgee. You may visit Mr. Hill, as he slumbers in peaceful repose at the funeral home in Okmulgee on Wednesday from 12 Noon until 7:00 PM.

Mr. Hill was born in Idabel, Oklahoma, the son of Grant and Maggie Hill. He moved to Okmulgee with his family in 1926 and remained here for the rest of his life.

He was a faithful member of Cleaves Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served the Lord as a Steward and also a Trustee of the Church.

Mr. Hill married Rose Mary Simms on December 10, 1930 and they remained married until her death in 1987. He worked for American St. Gobain Glass Company before his retirement in 1973. Through hard times as well as good times, he demonstrated a love of God, family and humanity. His work ethic was the cornerstone of his character.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Rose Mary, two children, Willa Minter and John Henry Hill, and a granddaughter, Gwendolyn.

He leaves in God's care to cherish his memory; his son, Clemmie Hill, Jr., Spencer, OK; his daughter, Rae Ann [Johnny] Wilson, Okmulgee, OK; 12 grandchildren, Gina, Angela, Janet, Sheila, John, Jr., Rena Gail, Kenneth, Sharon, Robbie, Joy, Alberta and Stephen; 18 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren and one great=great-great-grandchild; along with other relatives and friends.
