Coleman Hughes, Jr., was born on September 22, 1937 from the loving union of Coleman and Bertha [Parks] Hughes, Sr., in Darling Township, near the New Hope Community of Oktaha, Oklahoma. He spent the first four years of his life there before the family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma.
His parents nicknamed him "Snoodie" by his Mom and later, friends shortened it to "Nudie" which stuck throughout his life. He attended Dunbar Elementary School and graduated from Historic Manual Training High School with the Class of 1957. Nudie loved sports and participated in baseball, basketball and football, where he excelled in all three sports throughout his school years. During his pre-teen years, the Phillips brothers, Wesley, Elmer and Elvin came to live with their grandmother, "Aunt Jennie" and were raised like siblings.
Mr. Hughes joined Greater Shiloh Baptist Church at a very young age and remained a dedicated member for over 70 years. He married JoAnn Hickman in 1957 and their union was blessed with four children. He worked for over 28 years for Southwestern Bell Telephone as a repairman, and served the Lord faithfully as a Deacon as well as the bus ministry at Greater Shiloh. Coleman was instrumental in impacting the lives of many youths in the church and in the community. He coached a little league baseball team, the "Yaffe Scrappers" and had a passion for working with young people. He often picked them up for Sunday School and Church. He was also the bus driver for their trip to State and National Conventions. He took them to several different cities and states for more than 12 years. Afterward, they would always end their trip by going to the Amusement Park in most of those cities before the journey home.
