Derrick Wilson Lindsay was born September 1, 1963 from the living union of Robert and Mercides (Anthony) Lindsay, in Wilmington, Delaware. He was the first of two siblings.
Derrick's formal education began in Wilmington, Delaware, where he Graduated with the class of 1981. He was an exceptional student, always conscientious about his school work. He had a gift and passion for music and played several instruments as a member of the Newark high school marching band. He was also a gifted athlete, receiving scholarships in football and basketball.
Derrick attended Friendship Baptist Church as a youth, along with his parents and brother, where he professed his love for Christ.
After high school Derrick enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, serving his country honorably. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to attend Spartan School of Aeronautics. While in Tulsa, he met Uarinue Winford and to this union, three precious boys were born.
Derrick attended school and worked at the boy's home in Sands Springs where he was a youth counselor, he often talked about how he loved being able to mentor the young men.
In 1988 Derrick met Connie Matheny and they fell in love. To this union, a precious baby boy and precious baby girl were born. They made their home in Haskell, Oklahoma.
Derrick had a big personality and loved life. His favorite pastimes were making music and watching his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. On game day, he was decked out in "all" his Philly gear and he would cheer on his team. He also played in several bands, where he played the drums and guitar.
He was always striving to better himself, and while working at Capital One in Tulsa, he decided to go back to school. In March of 2012, he received an Associate of Science Degree in Computer Network Systems and in June of 2014, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Systems and Cybersecurity from ITT Technical Institute. Because of his outstanding Achievement, he was elected into the National Technical Honor Society. He did all of this while battling cancer.
Derrick united with the Flipper Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Taft, Oklahoma, where he sang with the choir and the Sons of Allen Men's Chorus. He also served as chairperson of the Trustee board.
Surrounded by his family, Derrick took his last breath and transitioned from "Earth to Everlasting" on Thursday, July 13, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mercides Anthony and foster brother, Shamar Lindsay.
Derrick leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Connie; his daughters, Taija and Ryan (Devin); his sons, Derrick, Jamalle, Jarrett and Joshua; his brother, Dion(Shelia)Lindsay; his Father, Robert Lindsay; his grandchildren, MaKayla, Cameron, Lyric, Aubree, Amiyah, Aleah, Joshua Jr, Jayden, Jordan, Kingston, Imauni, James Jr, and soon be baby boy; his Niece, Hope and nephew, Dion Jr.; his Uncles,Fred Sr, and Benny; and his Aunt Debra; along with a host of beloved Cousins, Family and Friends.
The final hour with Derrick will commence on Friday morning, July 21, 2017 in the most holy sanctuary of Flipper Chapel AME Church in Taft, Oklahoma. The Pastor, Reverend Dr. Samuel Craig will preside. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.
You may visit Mr. Lindsay, as he slumbers in peaceful repose at the funeral home in Muskogee on Thursday from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM. The Casket will not be opened at the Church on Friday.
