IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dick Gregory
Jones
October 1, 1963 – February 6, 2022
On October 1, 1963, a bright beautiful day in Okmulgee, OK, Charles and Geraldine Jones delivered a healthy baby boy whom they named Dick Gregory Jones. Gregory accepted the Lord into his life at an early age. He grew up attending the Church of God in Christ on Mission and Eufaula.
Dick Gregory attended Bannaker, Attucks and then Emerson Elementary, where he scored the highest on the California achievement test. He began working his first job at 9 years old in 1973 at Hollemans Iron and Salvage Yard. As he would say, "Doing a job that a grown man was walking off of." Gregory attended Okmulgee Middle School and High School, where he excelled in all tasks and activities he took part in and was a member of the "Leaven-In-The-Loaf " program as well as masonry and carpentry until he graduated with class of 1981.
He loved to go down to 5th St., The Hut, Biglow's Cab Company on East Randolph, Lula Maes & Poopies and hang with the "Minnesota Wrecking Crew".
Shortly after graduation, he and some more Okmulgians migrated to Dallas, where the 1980s construction boom of Downtown Dallas was in full swing.
In 1991, he had settled back in Okmulgee, where he met Shannon Mayberry, whom he was with for nine years, and from this union three children were born, Shelby Lorraine, Gregory Shane, and Kiara Shavon.
In 2015, he decided to further his education and enrolled in OSUIT's Culinary Arts program. He graduated in August 2017 with a 3.4 grade point average and an Associate of Arts degree. If you've ever eaten something he prepared, you were delighted. Dick Gregory had a list of plays lined up that he was working to execute, and these efforts will not go to waste. Greg loved the street life but gave it up to do what he loved most, be with family cooking his bbq and helping his friends, family, and the community.
On Sunday, February 6th, after a long journey, God came and relieved Dick Gregory Jones of his earthly duties and promoted him to a Heavenly Angel.
He is joined in the afterlife by his parents, Charles and Geraldine Jones, grandparents, Author and Louisea Jones and Nelly Thomas and John "SOON" Williams, and siblings, Aldora Colbert, Charlesetta Jones, Jerri Goudeau, and Arnetta Bruner.
Those on Earth keeping his spirit relevant: children, Shelby Lorraine Jones (Tulsa, OK), Gregory Shane Jones (Tulsa, OK), and Kiara Shavon Jones (Okmulgee, OK); special grandchildren, Shannon, Stevie, Kourtney, and Secure; siblings, Carolyn McCall (O'Fallon, IL), John Jones (Okmulgee, OK), Charles Jones, Jr. (O'Fallon, IL), Mark Jones (Tulsa, OK), and Florence Williamson (Tulsa, OK); special lifelong friend, Adam "Butch" Barker; plus a bullpen of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and classmates.
The Celebration of Life for Mr. Jones will commence on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at High Noon in the Wilson Gym of the Okmulgee Dunbar Middle School in Okmulgee. Pastor Charles Williams, will give the Eulogy.
