Don was introduced to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Canaan Baptist Church in Muskogee, under Reverend Brown.
He was a proud graduate of Muskogee High School in 1971. After graduating high school, he attended Langston University with a major in Elementary education. After leaving Langston University, Don was employed at H.B. Egan's from 1979 to 1988.

After the passing of his beloved late wife Edith Jo Payne, Don found love in his heart again in a long lost love, Jaqueline (Jaquie) Sherrard of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Don and Jaquie shared a love from 1974 to 1977, after life took them in a different directions. Don and Jaquie found each other again on June 19, 2019, and on October 16, 2021, their love for each other lead them both down the alter in marital bliss. He was a loving husband and father, and he loved everyone God allowed his life to touch.
After moving to Oklahoma City, he came out of retirement and worked until his last days for Bob Moore Cadillac in Oklahoma City.
