Obituary

Mother Dorothy E. Hayes, in her 88th year with us, "knelt before the Master, in Glory" on Sunday morning, January 21, 2017.

Dorothy Elizabeth Hayes was born March 26, 1929, to the late Virgil and Sarah Evans Sanders. She was the fifth of six girls in the family. (preceded in death by Mary, Ruby and Bertha).

The family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma, where shortly afterwards, Dorothy was born. In 1946, she graduated from Historic Manual Training High School in Muskogee. She moved to Kansas City, Missouri following her two older sisters, where she later met and married Clarence Toran. To this union, one child was born, Clara Ann. After that marriage dissolved, she later met and married Grant Hayes, Sr. To this union, four children were born; Sandra Kay, Grant Jr., Linnie Elaine and Ava Lorraine. After that marriage dissolved she moved back to Muskogee.

Mrs. Hayes worked as a domestic worker for several years before starting her job as a Nutritional Aide for the State of Oklahoma, where she worked for many years before retiring. One of her greatest God-given talents was being a care-giver for family and friends and her cooking skills.
She professed her hope in Christ at an early age and was a long-time member of Morning Star Baptist Church before the church closed its doors. She participated in the choir and loved singing, she served as the Mission President, a culinary leader and a Sunday School Attendant, and also in numerous other capacities within the church. She later joined St. Mark Baptist Church, where she served as one of the Mothers of the Church and provided the Food for Thought for the Seniors ministry.
