OBITUARY FOR DWIGHT DAVID OWENS
What a man does in life, how he serves others, and how he chooses to rear his family is perhaps the most fundamental, unequivocal and definitive guiding element of his character and being. A man that fervently provides help to the helpless and hope to the hopeless understands that serving God means serving man and today, we say farewell to the greatest man who has ever graced us with his presence.
Dwight David Owens (66) of Sand Springs, Oklahoma was called home to serve the Lord in an even greater capacity on February 20, 2023. Dwight was the 6 th child born to Floyd and Mavis Owens on August 31st, 1956 in Tulsa Oklahoma. He was a rambunctious teenager who valued his independence. Early in age, he fathered daughter Lakiesha Davis and his late son Bryant Gahagan, both of whom he loved very much…but as a father he wanted more for them. Although Dwight hadn't finished high school yet, he was determined to lead a different life than where he was undoubtedly headed. Unbeknownst to him, this single life altering decision in Dwight's life would send him on a journey…one with a trajectory that would forge a long-lasting legacy.
On June 15, 1974 at the young age of 17, Dwight enlisted into the United States Army as a Motor Transport Operator. While serving at his first duty station in Frankfurt Germany, he finished his high school degree and began taking advanced classes to hone the skillset of his new transportation career. In 1976, Dwight transferred to Ft. Sill Army Base in Lawton, Oklahoma where he met his wife Ruth Ann Owens (McClaney) and her three boys; Boyd, Richard and Daynottay. They were married on June 30, 1978 and celebrated 43 beautiful years together. During this time, they would welcome their only son Ashontay Owens into the world. In 1990, Dwight deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm & Shield, along with 35 nations to help defend Saudi Arabia and ultimately liberate Kuwait from Iraqi rule. This war changed the landscape of the world in terms of military power and brought all the uniformed services into the modern era. In the latter part of his military career, Dwight would be hand-selected for a special duty called Active Component to Reserve Component (ACRC). In this duty, Dwight would support the training and readiness of Army Reserve Components ensuring they were ready for deployment at a moments notice.
After serving honorably for over 23 years, Dwight retired from the Army on October 31, 1997 and began a new career as an Army ROTC Instructor at Northwest High School in Omaha, Nebraska. During his tenure, he helped shape the lives of thousands of students…ultimately guiding many of them towards enlistments and commissions of their own. After serving as an instructor for three years, Dwight & Ruth decided to place roots back in Oklahoma where we would see him begin his final career as a United States Post Office Mail Carrier. Over the span of his 20-year postal career, Dwight delivered mail to over 1.5 million households, but more importantly, he was able to continue his service to country both honorably and dutifully.
Dwight is preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Barbra Ann, his brothers, Lester and Maurice, his son, Bryant Gahagan and grandson, Jawan Davis. He is survived by his wife Ruth and five children, Boyd McClaney, Richard Robinson (Wife Charlene), Lakiesha Davis, Daynottay Jordan & Ashontay Owens (Wife Cori); nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Dwight is also survived by four sisters and one brother; Marsha Moore (husband Bobby), Carolyn Ingram (husband Larry), Jackie Tolbert (husband Vearl) Angie Williams (husband Ricky) and Charles Melvin Owens.
The funeral service for Dwight will be held at Greater Union Baptist Church on February 28, 2023 at 11am. The burial service will immediately follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
You may visit Mr. Owens, as he slumbers in peaceful repose in the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., of Tulsa on Monday, between the hours of 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
