Obituary

It all began in a small settlement, Gar Creek, near Porter, Oklahoma, when Elbert Leo Briscoe was born from the union of proud parents, Homer and Viola [Renfro] Briscoe on May 6, 1921.

He grew up in the area and attended Elementary School at Gar Creek and High School in Tullahassee, where he was a star basketball player at Carter G. Woodson High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country honorably from July of 1949 until January of 1953.

Later in life, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he was employed by General Motors Automobile Company for over 35 years before his retirement. He was a member of Bailey Temple in Detroit, but He moved back home to care for his grandmother after leaving Detroit and attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Porter.

Mr. Brisco was a jovial person, who loved people and living life to the fullest. He would often meet you with a big hello and a hug was sure to follow. He will be missed by all who befriended this kind, friendly gentleman.

It all came to a close on earth for Mr. Briscoe, after 81 years of life, on Saturday, December 4, 2010 from the Jack C. Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center. Certainly, he was greeted in glory by an even bigger smile, and well deserved rest from earthly labor. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.

He leaves to lament his passing; a brother, Jerry Briscoe, Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Tina, Kansas City, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Gloria Briscoe, Detroit, Michigan; his devoted companion, Dorothy Golden, Wagoner, Oklahoma; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

His final salute will commence on Monday, December 13, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the First Baptist Church of Porter, 325 North Main Street. Reverend Jamie Powell, associate minister at Union Baptist Church of Wagoner, will officiate. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.

You may visit Mr. Briscoe, as he slumbers at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 PM to 6 PM.
