Elder Oathar H. Todd, Sr., after 83 years with us, traveled up "That Highway called Holiness to join Church Triumphant " on Sunday afternoon, November 15, 2015 from the Jack C. Montgomery Regional Veterans Administration Medical Center in Muskogee.
God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints and do minister. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end. Hebrews 6:10-11
On March 19, 1932, a baby born was born to Henry and Susie Todd, they named him Oathar Henry Todd. He was the youngest of 4 sons, Eddie, Theodis and Clifford. He was raised and educated in the Okmulgee area. He went into the army in 1948 at the young age of 16. He fought in the Korean War serving as an Artillery Specialist. He was honorably discharged in 1952 at 20 years of age. Upon returning home, he attended OSU Okmulgee formerly known as Okmulgee Technical School. He graduated in 1955, with certifications in building construction and plumbing. He then began working in both capacities. His employment career also included working as a supervisor at Ball Glass for numerous years before he formed Todd's Construction Company, where he provided employment opportunities to his sons, grandsons and numerous people within the Okmulgee community.
Oathar learned about God and gave his life to Him in 1955 and began a lifetime of committing himself as a servant of the Lord. He joined the #3 Church of God In Christ in 1955 under Pastor Samuel Pointer. Oathar was a faithful member and served in many church capacities. He was called to the ministry in December 1961 and became ordained as an Elder in July 1969. Elder Todd founded The Eastside Church of God In Christ in July 1970 and served there faithfully as pastor till his heavenly transition (45 years).
On June 23, 1956 he married Irma Jean Parker, the love of his life. To this union 7 children were born, 3 daughters and 4 sons. To date the family has grown to include 30 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
During his life, Elder Todd also pastored the Ft. Gibson church of God in Christ for 14 years from 1977 to 1988, he pastored the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in McAlester, from 1991-1995, and assisted with re-establishing the Haskell church in 1998. During Elder Todd's ministry countless souls has been added to the kingdom. Several of his spiritual sons have moved on to become successful pastors and outstanding contributors to the Kingdom of God. Not only did God bless Elder Todd with the ability to build churches spiritually, but he was also blessed with the ability to build them physically. Elder Todd is responsible for a lot of the renovations to many churches in the Oklahoma area as well as doing extensive work in the Atlanta Georgia area. He was responsible for building the Beautiful Garden of Prayer church, formerly known as the Friendly COGIC in Tulsa. He was also summoned to Atlanta by the former Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ (Bishop Chandler David Owens) to construct major repairs on his headquarters church, Greater Community COGIC. One of the Pastor's favorite scriptures says, Except the lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it, except the lord keep the city the watchman waketh but in vain, and in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. Elder Oathar Todd was completely dedicated to God and remained faithful to his calling.
One of the Pastor's favorite songs is, "I won't complain". The words of the song convey and exemplify the sentiments that Elder Todd portrayed every day of his life. God's word says, I will never leave you nor forsake you. He was with Pastor Oathar Todd when he called him home on Sunday, November 15, at 12:15 PM.
The legacy he leaves with us is that of love and giving. He helped many people throughout his lifetime. Many stories can be told of all the things he did to help others. He often went to the Hostess Store in Muskogee and loaded his pickup down with pastries, cakes, and all types of bread, bring them to Okmulgee, and give them out to people in the community that were in need. He constantly bought candy to give out to any children he may encounter as he would be driving along. He would also buy a truck load of watermelons and have them all given away before he made it home. There was nothing he wouldn't do to help someone in need. The fondest memories are the ones he spent driving the church van, traveling all over, even to the convocation in Memphis Tennessee, to take the young people to different churches for fellowship with other young people. It made the trips extra special when he would stop along the way and buy treats for everyone. Everyone remembers the church picnics and how much fun they were. Elder Todd never met a stranger and it seemed as if everyone knew him and had kind words to say about him as well as so many personal stories to tell of how he helped them or what he meant to them. He was a good man, a hardworking man, a wonderful and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and most of all a God fearing man.
The Todd family has comfort in knowing that Elder Todd is safely with God where there is no more pain, but eternal peace. He can walk around heaven all day, doing what he loves to do, praising God's holy name!
Elder Oathar Todd was preceded in death by his father, mother and 3 brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 59 years, Irma Jean, his 7 children, Sharon, Joyce(James), Glenn, Oathar Jr. (Eneta), Marsheila, Mark, and Shaun, 30 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren, many others that affectionately called him "Papa", his church family, and a multitude of relatives and friends.
