Obituary

Elmer was born the 3rd child of D.C. & Georgia (Taylor) Cunningham on January 20th 1930 in Huttonville, Oklahoma. He attended Huttonville grade school and graduated from Booker T Washington High School in Eufaula, Oklahoma. Elmer was drafted into the U.S. Army after completing school and spent most of his service duty in Germany.
Upon returning home, Elmer married Mary (Wells) Cunningham in August of1954 at her mothers home in Huttonville.  To this union seven children were born and three preceded him in death.  Elmer and Mary moved to Kansas City, Kansas,  where he was employed by Midwest Wool Co. as a certified wool grader. He was employed as a night supervisor for G.E.H.A.  and after many years he retired from the J.C. Nichols Co. of Kansas City, Missouri.  Elmer was not only a proud member but a P.W. Patron of Star of Bethlehem Chapter #59 OES Kansas Jurisdiction. Elmer was an ordained deacon of St Andrew Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend T. R. Charles. He later moved his membership to Peculiar Baptist Church of Kansas City, Missouri.

After retirement, Elmer returned to his boyhood home and immediately reunited with New Hope Huttonville Baptist Church, where he had accepted Christ and was baptized at a very early age. Elmer had promised his mother in law to faithfully help in the rebuild of the new church, which he did. After his return to Huttonville, he was a member of the VFW of McIntosh County and a member of the McIntosh County NAACP.  Elmer served as Chairman of the deacon board at New Hope Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Reverend Albert Lowe. Elmer liked to spend his time growing  fruit and vegetables in his beautiful and productive garden. He also loved animals; raising and owning horses, hogs, roosters, and he would try to keep any stray dog. Elmer and Mary spent many hours with their children and their children's friends, who always filled his home and claimed Mary as their play mom.
