His birth
Elmer S. LuGrand was born on April 16, 1939 to Zenobia Wood LuGrand and James (Pete) LuGrand in Rusk Oklahoma..
His love for Christ
Elmer accepted Christ under the Pastorate of Rev. C.B. Nichols at the Christian Church in Boley Oklahoma . Elmer later united with St. Johns Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher under the current Pastor Elmer E. LuGrand.
His Life
Elmer was raised in the small close nit community of Rusk, Oklahoma with his 4 siblings. Elmer attended elementary in Rusk Oklahoma. and High School in Boley. After High School he served his country in the U.S. Army in the Field Artillery Division and was Honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal during his service. While serving he traveled to Germany, France, Scotland, and Azores Island.
Elmer met and married Emma J. Tryon in 1962 and they made their home in Boley Oklahoma. They raised six children, Dorothy (deceased), Bettye, Elmer E., Stanley, Jacqueline, & Cynthia, and their family also included Euly's, & Shirley. Elmer worked for Stander Construction, Capital Steel and Iron, and Cain's Coffee in Oklahoma City. After being severely hurt on the job at Capital Steel and Iron, he attended Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee Oklahoma where he received a degree in Shoe, Boot and Saddle repair and later opened Elmer's Shoe, Boot, & Saddle Repair in Okemah, Oklahoma. Elmer received a Bachelor of Science in Theology. When Elmer retired from the shoe business he tried his hand at farming, something that he loved. Elmer raised cattle, hogs and goats from 1988-2005. Elmer loved the outdoors, he especially loved hunting, and taking his grand kids fishing. After his injury he could no longer walk to hunt so Elmer bought a horse and named her Midnight and trained her to kneel so that he could mount and hunt off of her for several years , until he could walk again. He loved his horse. Elmer came out of retirement to work with his daughter Jacqueline and her Husband Tarrance at Floyd Construction Corporation in Wichita, Kansas from 2008-2013.
Elmer loved is home town of Rusk and Boley. He served in numerous and varied positions including but not limited to Mayor, School Board Member, Chamber of Commerce, Boley rural water board #1, Past Worshipful Master climax lodge 116, American Legion Post 234, Assistant to the District Deputy to the District 6, Worthy Patron for Victor Chapter 154.
His Memory
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents James and Zenobia LuGrand, one brother Elbert LuGrand and one sister Glory Dixon.
He leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, Bettye J. Tryon of Bethany, Ok, Elmer E. (Gloria) LuGrand of Boley, Ok, Stanley LuGrand of Bethany, OK, Jacqueline (Tarrance) Floyd of Wichita, Kansas, Cynthia (Ricky) Sanders of Norman, Oklahoma, Eulys & Shirley Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, . Two sisters Donnie Burch, Clarksville, Tennesee and Verdell Dawkins, Houston, Tx, many grands, and a host of great grands, , his special cousin and running buddy Melvin Andrews, special friend Clara Normore, and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Elmer LuGrand will be Saturday January 5, 2019 at 1PM at Amos Temple CME Church in Boley.
Visitation will be Friday from 1PM until 6PM in the Boley Hyde Park Chapel.
