Florine A. Cross McCurdy, in her 95th year, surrendered her soul to Jesus on Tuesday morning, March 13, 2012 from LaPlata, Maryland.
The daughter of Birdie House Cross and Harry D. Cross, Sr., she was the first of three children and grew up with her family in Okmulgee, where she attended the Okmulgee Public School system. She graduated from Historic Dunbar High School with the Class of 1935.
She then furthered her education at Oklahoma Colored Agriculture and Normal University [ Langston University ]. After two years of study, she traveled to St.Louis, Missouri to marry her sweetheart, Richard Stanley McCurday, Sr., in June of 1937. Their union was blessed with 5 children.
Florine accepted Christ into her life and was baptized at Shorter Chapel AME Church in Okmulgee. She was very active in church activities and worked tirelessly during 26 years of service to Okmulgee Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 3 sons, Richard [Dick] Jr., Lawrence and Gregory.
Mrs. McCurdy leaves behind her daughter, Barbara [Marvin] Lynn; her son, Mike [Kathy] McCurdy; daughters-in-law, Joyce, Opay and Cynthia; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The Sacred farewell will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. in the Shorter Chapel AME Church. Reverend W. T. Brown, Pastor, will Preside. Burial will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery.
