Mrs. Gaynell Reed, after 90 years with us, dozed into eternity on Friday night, February 5, 2016 from Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Gaynell Griffin was born on June 2, 1925, the daughter of Robert and Luester Griffin in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her parents and brother, Robert, Jr., relocated to Muskogee, where she attended Dunbar Elementary, Sadler Jr. High and Manual Training High School.
Gaynell married Porter LaVare Reed on September 2, 1943. To this union, seven [7] children were born; Quinton, LaVare, Lorenzo, Leonard, Paula, Portia and Pamela. Porter and Gaynell were married for 73 years!
She was employed for many years at Treadway Grocery. A community store where everyone knew Mrs. Gaynell was running the store. She later worked for Dr. Jesse Chandler until he retired. Her employment also included Muskogee General Hospital, where she worked in Maternity, caring for many babies before retired from the Hospital's Central Supply department.
Her love of family found her working hard every day to care for her family until her death. She always wanted the best for her children. She loved to cook and you could always be served a meal in her home. She loved all children and they loved her. Many days, a flow of kids could be seen at her home referring to her as Grandma, while wanting to know "what we havin' for dinner?"
Gaynell loved Rayfield Baptist Church and was a faithful member for many years, where she could always be found serving in an auxillary. Over the years, she sang in the Choir, served on the Usher Board and was an active Deaconess and member of the Willing Workers Mission Circle.
Preceding her in death; her parents, her son, Quinton and LaVare, her daughter, Paula Faye, her grandson, LaVare Renee', and a brother, Robert Griffin, Jr.
She leaves in God's care; her husband of 73 years, Porter L. Reed; her sons, Lorenzo, Muskogee, Leonard Sr., Kansas City, MO; her daughters, Portia, Muskogee and Pamela, Chicago, IL; her grandchildren, Derrick [Eunice], Ashley and Rachelle, all of Muskogee, Demetri, Detroit, MI, Amani, Leonard, Jr., and Nikia, all of Kansas City, MO; her great-grandchildren, Hillary, Moises, Jacent, Braxton, Ashton, Austyn, Tyson, Milani, LaVare, Amiyah and Kenzi; her special daughters-in-law, Mary Ann, Vicki and Queen Esther; along with a host of cousins and many friends.
The Sacred Farewell will commence on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. in the most Holy sanctuary of the Rayfield Baptist Church. Her Pastor, Reverend Leroy Walker, Sr., will officiate. The Christian Committal will follow the service in the Booker T. Washington Cemetery in Muskogee.
