Gerald Edwin Payne, 64, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away on January 15, 2025. He was born on July 17, 1960, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, to Barbara Barnett-Payne and Jimmy West. He spent most of his childhood in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where he created lasting memories with his siblings and mother.
Gerald leaves behind three daughters: Tamera Owens, Cheryl Antwine, and Diamond Reyes. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Gerardo Reyes; six siblings: Daniel "Tony" Barnett, Brenda Taylor (Stan), Ronald Payne (Denese), Carl Morgan, Bridgett Taylor (Keith), and Karen Morgan; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, bonus children: Kenneth Labostre, Jessica Motton, Antonio Mack, and their children; uncle, Billie Barnett; and a host of family whom he cherished deeply. He was preceded in death by his daughter, LaTasha Benson, his grandson, Cam'Ron Owens, his parents, Barbara Barnett-Payne and Jimmy West, and his stepfather, Wilton Morgan. As a child, Gerald had fond memories of helping with rodeos alongside his stepfather, Wilton Morgan, an experience that stayed with him throughout his life.
These early years in Okmulgee shaped his deep sense of family and community.
Gerald graduated from Okmulgee High School, Class of 1978, and went on to make a lasting impact in his community through his work as a bus driver for Tulsa Public Schools, where he dedicated nearly 40 years of service. His love for music, especially gospel and old-school tunes, was legendary. As a DJ, Gerald had a natural talent for making every party come alive with his infectious energy and passion for music. He also had a deep love for singing, often lifting his voice in praise and joy.
Gerald was a proud and loyal fan of the University of Oklahoma Sooners, always supporting his team with enthusiasm, especially during game days. His love for OU was a part of his spirited personality and a bond he shared with family and friends.
Gerald was a man of deep faith and was a devoted member of Solid Rock Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon. He had the honor of serving alongside his brother, who was a pastor, in ministry and shared his love for the Lord with others. Gerald's commitment to the Lord was evident in everything he did, from his devotion to reading his Bible to his involvement in church activities. He was a pillar in his community, known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
A man who loved life, Gerald had an undeniable love for food, could always be counted on to make people laugh with his jokes, and was always there to check in on family and friends. Whether driving over to visit or calling just to check on someone, Gerald's presence was a constant source of warmth and love.
He also loved to unwind with a cold Bud Light and a game of dominos, often spending hours with family and friends, sharing stories and laughter. Gerald's spirit will be remembered for his humility, sense of humor, and his deep love for the Lord.
Gerald will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Services will be Saturday January 25, 2025 at 11AM at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Okmulgee.
Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery - Okmulgee.
Visitation will be Friday from 1PM until 6PM in The Tulsa Chapel.
