Gladys M. Simmons Mosley Grundy – Born August 2, 1917 in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma to Garfield Grundy and Rose Simmons.  Gladys was the youngest of six siblings.  Gladys attended school in the rural community of Pumpkin Center/Bald Hill, through the eighth grade, and attended high school at Dunbar School (Okmulgee, Oklahoma).  Gladys made her home in Okmulgee until the age of 25.  In August 1942, with the blessing of her mother, Rose Simmons (aka Sus) Gladys moved to the big city of Chicago, IL, to join her older sister Lula.  Lula later decided to move to California.  Gladys' thoughts were to move back to Okmulgee, but according to her, "Momma said, you moved to Chicago, so stay there" and for 70 years; she did just that! Gladys is survived by three nieces: Lillian Frazier (Patterson, CA), Urealene Jones (Robert) ( Newman, CA) and Donzetta Seals (Tulsa, Oklahoma). Also, a host of relatives and friends.

Gladys met Clinton Mosley in Chicago and later married him.  This union was short lived.  Gladys agreed with II Thessalonians 3:10 "if a man will not work; he will not eat".  After the marriage was dissolved, Gladys took her father's last name, Grundy.

While in Chicago, Gladys worked as a janitress at the Lurie Company in the LaSalle and Wacker Building, retiring after thirty-two (32) years of loyal service.  She was very active in the Grant AME Church, where she worshipped faithfully and loved the church and the members.  She served on the Senior Usher Board and traveled to visit other churches. Gladys was a volunteer for Operation PULL and helped with the feeding and clothing ministry of Grant Memorial AME Church.  She attended weekly Bible Study and Grant's Book Club.  Gladys so loved Grant and stated emphatically, "nobody can run me away from my church."

Gladys was a neat and dapper dresser. She drove and parked her car like the pros at the Indy 500. She was outspoken and vivaciously made her point. Gladys could strike up a conversation talking about almost anything. She will always be known for her quick wit and for the love she had for her church and the members. Gladys stated often that she would do anything for her beloved Grant AME Church.

Gladys was born into a long line of Simmons.  Gladys' great-grandparents, Pompey Simmons and wife Hetty were deemed "first generation".  Pompey (1833) and Hetty (1834) were born in South Carolina.  To this union, ten children were born.  Gladys' grandparents, Tricy Simmons (born 1857) in Camden, Alabama and wife Susan "second generation" had 17 children, which were the "third generation" Simmons.  One of the seventeen born to Tricy and Susan was Gladys' mother; Rose Simmons aka SUS, born in 1878 in Camden, Alabama.  The "fourth generation", too numerous to name individually, was close to 50 or more in number; all siblings and/or first cousins.

On February 11, 2022, in Oklahoma City, OK, in the lovely home of Calvin Whittaker (Gladys' cousin and caregiver), Gladys M. Simmons, being the last survivor of the "fourth generation", closed her eyes and peacefully stepped into the presence of the Lord and was reunited with all the generations of Simmons gone before her.  Oh, what a reunion this must have been!!

The book of fourth generation Simmons is now closed and the baton passed on to the fifth generation of Simmons; let's make them proud by loving one another and standing up for what is pleasing to our Heavenly Father!!

Rest in Peace Gladys.  You fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you kept the faith.  Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the rest of the Lord!!

We Will see you O'er Yonder!!
