On April 16, 1948, a son was born to Alford Battice Mitchell and Ethel Greenleaf and they named him Herbert. He was the oldest of eight children in the household. There was a total of ten brothers and seven sisters.
Herbert graduated with the Class of 1966 in Rentiesville, Ok. Following graduation he went to Wichita, Kansas and worked in Construction to help build the Freeways and Interstates in the state of Kansas. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, buying and reselling cars.
He married his high school sweetheart, Viola Beard and to this union two children were born, a son Dain and a daughter Tracie. Herbert and Viola were married for 26 years until her passing in 1993. Herbert also had a daughter named Renita Davis.
Drafted into the United States Army in 1967, Herbert dutifully and faithfully served his country for twenty years for his tour of duty in Korea, Vietnam and Germany. He received distinguished honors and was Honorably Discharged in October of 1987 in Kirksville, Mo, where he served as the head coach for the rifle team at North-Eastern State University. He returned to Oklahoma to finish his career at the Veteran's Administrations and retired from there after twenty years.
He met his second love Pamela Kirkland in 1999 and they were married in 2002 for 19 years. And to this union he inherited two step children, Larry and MeGhan Kirkland.
Herbert knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was big on family and loved helping out his friends. When he received his disability he helped other fellow veterans in getting their disability as well. The love of his life was his grandkids. The sun would rise and shine in his eyes when he was spending time with them. He had the biggest smile on his face all the time when it came to his grandkids. He loved family vacations and he took very good care of them making sure that they were well taken care of before his death. Herbert transitioned this world exemplifying the word of God "Romans 13:8'-Owe No Man Anything but to Love Him; As he Owed not one debt!
