On April 3, 1936 a bundle of joy was born to Eddie and Mardella Miles Nelson. They named their baby boy Herman Nelson. He was the second child born to the union. He graduated with an A+ grade average from Manual Training High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1954. He married Frances Smith, and to this union, four children were born. He worked for many years at Love Bottling Company in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He moved to Denver, Colorado in 1965 and worked at Hostess Wonder Bread Company for 31 years before retiring in 1999.

Herman also loved listening to blues music, playing his guitar, fishing, crossword puzzles, and was a sports fanatic. His favorite football team was the Pittsburgh Steelers. Not a week would pass without Herman buying his lottery ticket.
