Mr. Hiram Burr, in his 67th year, transitioned to Eternal Rest on Thursday, March 28, 2019 from Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Hiram was born on August 22, 1951 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to the late George and Verona (Haynes) Burr.
He attended the Muskogee Public Schools and graduated from Manual Training High School in 1969 and Northeastern State University in 1973. While at Northeastern, he pledged and became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity,Inc.
After graduating from college, Hiram moved to Akron, Ohio, where he worked for the Southern County Child Reserve Center as a social worker and Western Reserve Hospital for over 15 years.
After moving back to Muskogee, he worked for the state of Oklahoma as a social worker for many years until a stroke left him disabled.
Hiram had a passion for sports and played basketball and football in high school, and baseball during the summer. While in Ohio, he played catcher for a fast pitch softball team in the city of Akron, Ohio.
In 2010, he was inducted into the Summit County fast pitch softball Hall of Fame, where he received a trophy and ring.
Hiram was a member of Ward Chapel AME Church where he had served as an usher years ago.
Hiram was preceded in death by: father,George; mother, Verona; brother, Aaron; son, Jermond; granddaughter, Aniyah
He is survived by his five children: Vincent Burr(Tulsa), Henry Harvey(Cal.), Veronica Sales (Virginia), Katrina Dixon (Ohio), Monette Burr (Tulsa) 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren;
Three siblings;
Carolyn (Sam) Kyser of Leavenworth, Kansas; Sandra(Robert) Braxton of KCK; and Jacqueline Neely of Naperville, Illinois, and 9 nieces and nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews, 1 great great niece, and many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 4:00 PM in the People's Chapel of the funeral home in Muskogee. Friends are invited to share in memories and stories with the family. His Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will render their Memorial Ritual of Brother Burr's entrance into the Omega Chapter of their beloved fraternity.
You may visit Brother Burr, as he slumbers in peaceful repose at the funeral home on Friday, April 5, 2019 from 2 PM until 6 PM, and on Saturday beginning at 3 PM.
