Obituary

On May 19, 1948, the second son of Horace Clyde and Allie Mae [Willis] Chandler was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma.  They named their son Horace Eugene Chandler.

Better known as "Gene" to family and friends, Mr. Chandler was baptized at an early age at Antioch Baptist Church under the late Reverend B. W. Noble.  He attended Muskogee Public Schools, and ultimately graduated from Historic Manual Training High School with the Class of 1966.

After completing high school, he began working for Corning Glass Works.  He met Flossie Evonne Parks, when they were 14 and 15 years old and after falling in love, they were married on September 1, 1967.  He worked for Corning for four months before joining the United States Army, serving his country honorably from January 8, 1968 until his discharge on July 7, 1971.  He attained the rank of Sargent while stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, serving as Military Police in the 503rd Company B.  While still serving his country, two children were born;  Glenda Fay and Horace Chandler Jr.

Later, after completing his duty, he returned to Muskogee, Oklahoma, and a third child, Cathy Renae was born.  He resumed his employment at Corning Glass Works and remained there until his health began to spiral downward.  Regardless of the setbacks from his health, he fought back to overcome each disability that was taking a toll on his body.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who loved his family and was loyal to his friends.

During his challenging health issues, he was well taken care of by the professional staff of the Veteran's Administration Medical Center.  Great care was taken to help care for him and special attention was given to him while battling congestive heart failure which weakened his body, but never his spirit.  He was taken to many specialists and various procedures given to assure him of the best quality of life possible and to reduce his physical pain.

On Saturday, October 7, 2017, just after noon, Horace Eugene Chandler, Sr., "finished his course" on Earth.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace Clyde and Allie Mae Chandler, his brothers, Paul Lawrence Chandler, George Chandler and Elijah Chandler, and a sister, Patricia Strand.

He leaves in God's care;  his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Flossie E. Chandler, of the home in Muskogee;  his children, Glenda Chandler Burnett [ Donovan, Horace Chandler, Jr., [Hazel],  and Cathy Renae Fudge;  three grandsons, Corey Chandler, Christopher Chandler and Cain G. Clayton; one granddaughter, Kaila Chandler;  two brothers, Clyde Sonny Chandler, Lancaster, Texas and Gordon Dee Chandler [Katrina], North Richmon HIlls, Texas;  four sisters, Wanda Chandler, Austin, Texas, Letha Nette Sallis [Henry], Edmond, Oklahoma, Brenda "Tina" Reed [Ricky], and April Hester [Tim]; along with a caravan of other family members and friends who will miss his presence and cherish his memory.
