Obituary

Horace Albert Owens Jr. was born on June 28, 1942, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Horace Owens Sr. and Thelma Harris. A devoted man of God, Horace accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior early in life. He received his first ushering position at New Bethel Pentecostal Church, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to his faith.

Each morning, he began his day with what he affectionately called "a breakfast for champs"—rising before anyone else to spend quiet time in devotion, pray over his family, and enjoy his morning coffee. Horace remained an active member of his church community until the end of his life.

Horace attended Central High School in Detroit, Michigan, before returning to Tulsa. It was there, while riding the city bus along the streets of Greenwood, that he met the love of his life, Clemmie. The two were married on December 17, 1968, and together built a life rooted in love, faith, and service.

Horace was a dedicated worker. He retired after 30 years of service with Southwestern Bell. True to his motto, "No finance, no romance," he returned to the workforce and served an additional 22 years at Yorktown before retiring a second time.

Horace's love for people was evident in every part of his life. He had a warm, magnetic presence and never failed to bring joy to those around him. Together, he and Clemmie provided a safe and loving home to over 100 foster children—fulfilling a mission to give every child a better life and a place to call home.

His charisma and quick wit made him unforgettable. Whether quoting one of his favorite sayings—like "stay up" or "hard work, clean living"—or sharing stories, Horace kept family and friends laughing and inspired. He cherished time with his children and grandchildren, creating a legacy of love, strength, and laughter.

On May 6, 2025, Horace gained his heavenly wings. He is now reunited with his beloved wife of 54 years, Clemmie, and rests in the eternal peace of the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace Owens Sr. and Thelma Harris; his wife, Clemmie Owens; and his sisters, Willa Howard and Shelly Owens.

Horace leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Keynon Owens (Tan); daughters, Keita Owens (Alamin), Sherell Owens, and Brittney Owens (Xavier); grandchildren, Jeremiah Owens, Keynon Owens Jr., Shannon Owens, Braela Bethany, and Alamin Ripon; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and cherished friends.
