Izetta Cooper, 92, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025.
Born on February 23, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, Izetta grew up during the transformative decades of the 1940s and 1950s—a time marked by resilience, community, and change. These early years instilled in her a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and education, shaping the compassionate and resourceful woman she became.
As the 1960s brought social change and civil rights movements, Izetta embraced her role as a mother and matriarch, leading her family with quiet strength, grace, and conviction. She became a pillar of support for her children, neighbors, friends, and young women who looked to her as a model of dignity and perseverance.
Izetta earned an associate's degree in Early Childhood Education, reflecting her passion for learning and nurturing others. Over the years, she thrived in multiple careers, including tax accounting, women's health, and entrepreneurship—each path showcasing her intelligence, work ethics, and dedication to helping others.
Despite being from a generation that didn't grow up with technology, Izetta was remarkably sharp, adaptive, and tech-savvy. She embraced new advancements with curiosity, effortlessly navigating smartphones, computers, and digital tools with confidence. Whether managing finances online, engaging with loved ones through social media, or staying informed on the latest innovations, she never let technology pass her by. Her ability to evolve with the times was yet another testament to her brilliance, independence, and unwavering desire to keep learning.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Issac Cotton Sr. and Esther Cotton, as well as her husband, James "Jimmy" Cooper; her children:
- Izetta Yvonne Franklin and her husband Harrison Franklin
- Marcia Cooper
- Lorne Cooper (survived by his wife Tina Cooper)
- Cassandra "Sandy" Cooper (survived by her husband Alvin Hargrove)
- Caroline Joyce Cooper
- Velma Cooper
She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Wilson Matthews, Elizabeth Guerrero, Caroline Frazier, Samual Cotton, Steven Cox, Jonathan Cotton and Barbara Lymore.
She is survived by her children: Victoria Coburn, Deborah Thrower and her husband Harold Thrower Jr., Eric Cotton and his wife Patty Cotton, and Donald Cooper.
Izetta was a proud and loving grandmother to 27 grandchildren, including Lenora Morris (preceded in death), Harrison Franklin Jr., Tracy Jerral Franklin ("TJ"), Tori Nicholson, Tara Franklin, Frank Coburn, James "Jamie" Coburn, Ginger Coburn, ShaShona Thrower, Danielle Miller, Harold Thrower III, Waymond Cotton, LaToya Brantley, Romeo Cooper, Ramone Cooper, Sasha Varnell, Nitaija "TaTa" Hargrove (preceded in death), LaMyia Hargrove, LaKyia Hargrove, Teanna Woodward, Tashea Cooper, Naquisha Cooper, TaShawn Cooper, TeRonn Cooper, Niaree Cooper, Robin Cooper, and Kiara Cooper. To her grandchildren, she was more than a matriarch—she was their rock, offering wisdom, warmth, and unconditional love that will live on in the values she instilled.
She is also survived by her beloved brothers, Issac "Uncle Cot" Cotton and Dennis "Uncle Dennis" Cotton, who were her lifelong sources of strength, laughter, and shared family history.
Her legacy extends beyond family; she leaves behind a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren, along with a large extended family and countless friends who will carry her memory in their hearts.
A memorial service will be held on June 21st, 2025, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her remarkable life.
Izetta's legacy of love, resilience, and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
