Obituary

On June 19, 1965, a bundle of joy was delivered to Frankie Brewer and the late Rev. Walter L. Brewer. The couple named their baby boy James Lorenzo. He was the eldest of five children: two brothers and two sisters. James was a 1983 graduate of Muskogee High School. In High School, he was interested in acting and received numerous first place trophies for Dramatic and Humorous Duets. He starred in the lead role in the play "A Raisin in the Sun." After a short pursuit in an acting career, James accepted the call to preach. He began preaching the Gospel in December 11, 1988.

Rev. James Brewer was licensed at the St. Mark Baptist Church of Muskogee under the pastorage of Rev. Mark Williams. He attended Liberty Baptist College. He matriculated to Tulsa, Oklahoma in April of 1989 and began attending the Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the pastorage of his uncle, the late Dr. E.E. Holley. He served four years under the leadership of Pastor Holley during which time he was ordained and made co-pastor.

James was the pastor of Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for 22 years. During his tenure as Pastor, he helped establish a Department of Christian Education, Leadership workshops, and Teacher Training Workshops, as well as offered courses from the Certificate of Progress Program. He also drove for Meals on Wheels. He was enrolled in the Oklahoma School of Religion. He received numerous certificates in Pastoral and Christian Studies including receiving an Associate's degree in 2006 in Biblical Studies. He was vice president of the Congress of Christian Education in the Collate District. He served as President of the Creek District Baptist Congress of Christian Education. James was the Vice-Moderator-at-Large of the Creek District Baptist Association. In December of 2000, James marched with the graduates in Nashville, Tennessee at the National Christian Educators Conference where he became certified with the ability to teach at any level. He completed the Pastors Alternative course four times, and finished Phase four of the Certificate of Progress Program.

Rev. Brewer helped with the building of the educational building which was named after and dedicated to the memory of our beloved late Pastor, Dr. E. E. Holley. For many years, James hosted classes taught from the Oklahoma School of Religion. This December would have marked his 27th year of preaching the Gospel.

James was married to the Late Gwendolyn F. Brewer for 21 years. Together they had three children: James Jr. and twins, Alicia and Jalicia; one grandson, Jaishon. He also leaves behind a mother, Frankie Brewer; two brothers, Keith and Michael (Felecia) Brewer; two sisters, Serena and Angela, two sisters-in-law; Debra Jamison (Jackie) and Sherry Morris; one brother-in-law, Paul (Michelle); as well as a host of aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services are set for Reverend Brewer on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Eleventh Hour in the Prestigious Halls of First Baptist Church North in Tulsa.

A day of reflection will be held Friday, October 10, 2014 between high Noon and Seven P.M. with a wake to follow at the Seventh o'clock Hour at the Most Gracious Mt. Caramel Baptist Church.
