On September 7, 1943, a baby boy was born to William Turner Gaines and Glendina McNac Gaines and they named him James Edward Johnson.
James received his education in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where he attended Historic Manual Training High School. He enjoyed football, basketball and fishing as well as hanging out with his buddies, Dee Dee Fields, Billy Ray Fields, Baby Ray Davis and Uncle Pete along with others.
He met and married Alice Mae Gamble in 1962 and to this union, two children were born. James Edward Johnson, Jr., [ Melanie] and Dyon Elaine Johnson [Michael]. Later in life, he met Ola Ephram and from this union, Joseph Eric Johnson was born. He accepted Darwin E. Parker as his step-son.
Mr. Johnson worked in Taft, Oklahoma for many years at the Taft D. B. & O. Center, then later, at the Severs Hotel and ultimately, drove a Taxi for Service Cab Company before his retirement.
On June 13, 2017, James Edward Johnson, Sr., after 73 years, finished his course on earth. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Emma Mayberry Vanhook and a brother, William Gaines, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory; his children, James Jr., Dyon, Eric, and Darwin; his grandchildren, James III, Shamica, Alexis, Prince, Bryson, Latoya, Jessica, Joseph and Chanta; his great-grandchildren, Natalia, Kalesha, Jakari, Shamya, Mario, Dominique, Alaysia, Jody IV, Bryson Jr.; his special sister, Glendale Craig; along with a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
A memorial ceremony will be shared on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Remembrance at the funeral home in Muskogee.
