Jaunita Carol Walston Walker, after 65 years left this life for a life eternal on Saturday evening, March 4, 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona.
She was fourth of five children born to the late Dwen and Dorthy [Halliburton] Walston on November 12,1957 at Okmulgee City Hospital, Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Jaunita was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents and her brother Dwen Walston Jr. Her grandson Travell L. McGriff.
As a child she was a member of Osage Avenue Christian Church in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and became fond of Shorter Chapel AME Church in her younger years where she started singing in the choir. She attended Okmulgee High School where she joined the Okmulgee Bulldogs Flag Core as well as the debate club. In her spare time, she loved to fish & draw. When it came to the Pittsburgh Steelers football team, they brought her joy.
In 1976 she graduated from Okmulgee High School and married Tommy L. McGriff moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma she had her 1st daughter Tanita L. McGriff during this union. Many years later she married Montez Brown and moved to Lawton, Oklahoma had her 2nd daughter Angel M. Brown is what she named her. While working at the Hair salon in Lawton, Oklahoma she furthered her career by purchasing the Hair salon.
During this time of her life, she was a committed church member of Grant Chapel AME church in Lawton, Oklahoma where she was a faithful choir member and enjoyed going to Bible study. She raised her two daughters in the church house where she had them sing in the youth choir. During this time, she met Baron Walker they married and relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico and joined Grant Chapel AME Church. Where she joined the Edith C. English Women's Missionary Society and was also a stewardess as well as member of the choir.
She furthered her education where she received her Associate Degree from Central New Mexico continued her education at University of New Mexico where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in University Studies. After receiving her Bachelor's degree, she relocated to Phoenix, Arizona where she joined The Historic Tanner Chapel AME church.
Jaunita enjoyed providing support to her community where she joined the Home-Health Care field. She continued to serve the Lord until she was called home. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Jaunita leaves to celebrate her life: Her two daughters Tanita L. McGriff (Shantel) Albuquerque, New Mexico and Angel M. Brown-Valencia Albuquerque, New Mexico. She leaves her sister Veronica Miller (Timothy) Midwest City, Oklahoma, Brothers: Herbert Walston in Las Vegas, Nevada, Terry Walston of Okmulgee, Oklahoma and Aunt Priscilla Hill Richmond, California.
Celebrating her freedom are her grandchildren: Sir Steven McGriff, Mister James McGriff and Esquire McGriff, Byron Winley. And a host of other relatives, she was blessed to have life-long friends. Jaunita was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, aunts, uncles, her sibling Dwen Walston Jr. Her grandson Travell L. McGriff
The Sacred Farewell for Jaunita will commence on Friday, April 14, 2023 at the Eleventh Hour in the most holy sanctuary of Shorter Chapel AME Church-Okmulgee.
You may visit Ms. Walker, as she slumbers in sweet repose in the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., of Okmulgee on Thursday, April 13, 2023 between the hours of 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
The Christian Committal will immediately follow the services in the Clearview Cemetery in Clearview.
