A Soldiers Story

A soldier named Jimmie Douglas Isom, Jr. was born on July 9, 1944 in Vancouver, Washington to Jimmie and Leona Isom. Born the first of seven children, he was referred to as "Big Brother." He accepted our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at an early age, and was truly a "gift from God."

He moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in his childhood, attending grammar school at Dunbar Elementary, then to Carver Junior High School, culminating with his graduation from the historic Booker T. Washington High School with the BTW class of "62" where he joined the wrestling team along with two other brothers Johnnie and Glen. He loved his alumni and followed the school activities faithfully. He also received training at Okmulgee Tech.

Mr. Isom then joined the United States Army in 1964, serving honorably for 3 years, later joining the USAR until he retired with high levels of honor as a Sgt. First Class with integrity earning numerous metals, badges, and decoration. On December 29, 1964, Jimmie married Lazola Shumate. This union produced two children: Patrice and Veronica. This union later dissolved, but later dissolved, but worked together to keep the family together. On March 9, 1994, he married Patrica Coleman on her birthday. The couple became inseperable, even to the point of often wearing matching attire. The union extended the family to two more children: Andrea and Christopher, Jr.

Mr. Isom was employed at CE NATCO for 17 yers as an electrician, and was also employed at Nordam. In 1989, he was hired as a mechanic at American Airlines until his retirement in 2006. He left his mark of kindness and genorisity in the work place, in which an abundance of his friends continued to keep in touch after his retriement and often would meet for lunch dates. Jimmie was a strong and reliable person. Jimmie devoted his life to family. He had a caring heart, was consistent, and dependable, and accurate in carrying out responsibility. He was consistently punctual, and kept the family in proper perspective with time management. The family would stand at attention when Jimmie would enter the room. He also loved his church family at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, the church where his grandfather once stood as pastor.

Jimmie Douglas Isom, Jr. was a well dressed man, who enjoyed life to the fullest. He took trips on luxury cruises, to Hawaii, The Virgin Islands, Mexico, The Bahamas, and Jamaica. He was a big Oklahoma Sooners fan as well as of the NFL, and would attend a Dallas Cowboys football game once a year. He could cut a mean rug when it came to dancing, as if he was on Dancing With The Stars. He enjoyed different organizations such as 20 Gents, BTW Class of 1962, and NABVET. He stayed fully prepared in supervisory skills, serving as vice president of the Mt. Olive Usher Board, Trustee Board, Vice Commander of the NABVETS in 1991 serving in the 827th Supply Company Operation, Desert Shield, and the Allied Victory in Operation Desert Storm. He was a strong Soldier for the Lord. As a member of the Brotherhood, he was always willing to lend a helping hand when the Kitchen Auxillary needed him. Jimmie will be solely missed by all, leaving "A Great Legacy...."

Jimmie Douglas Isom, Jr. took the Master's hand and followed the path God laid for him on Thursday, October 20, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie, Sr. and Leona Isom, his children's mother, Lazola Isom, three brothers: Donald Ray, Jackie, and Glen Isom, one sister: Brenda Carter, and one cousin, Rachel Carter.
