Obituary

In the warmth of their home in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on January 10th, 1935 Ferdinand "Fred" Cazenave and his wife Blanche welcomed their second child, Joan.  From an early age, Joan sought to help others in any capacity.  She worked on her parents' farm tending to the animals and aided in the chores by washing clothes and hanging them on the line.

Joan attended Uganda Martyrs Catholic School amongst her extended family that dominated the classroom.  She would often recall how entertaining it was to be with her family stating, "we were always together and were raised more like siblings than cousins."  When Uganda Martyrs closed, Joan along with her cousins, attended Dunbar High School where she graduated in May 1952.

Together with her sister Gladys, Joan's first job was at a department store, Ramsey's where she had her first glimpse into the world of financial credit.  With a little persuasion from her cousin Mildred, Joan reluctantly agreed to a date with Lester "Toffee" Fuselier.  This tall, shy gentleman soon became the love of her life and the two married June 8, 1957 at Uganda Martyrs.

Joan and Toffee moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where she worked briefly as a housekeeper with her cousin Vivian.  Her drive to help others landed her a job at St. Francis working as a nurse aide on the maternity ward.  It was during this time she gave birth to two sons herself, Lester Anthony "Tony" and Danny.  Despite being told she would not be able to conceive any more children, two years later Joan and Toffee welcomed a baby girl, Jamie, who completed their family.

When her children became school age, Joan returned to retail at Brown Duncan (now known as Dillards) where she worked in the credit department. With hard work, she became the credit manager, overseeing daily operations and staff. Seeking to gain further knowledge and experience, she became the credit card manager at First National Bank of Tulsa.  Despite not having a college education, Joan attained prestigious recognition in the area of financial credit which aided in obtaining her position as a vice president in the credit card division at USAA.  She often was heard urging others to work hard and never allow their circumstances to determine their true potential.

After retirement from USAA, Joan was able to dedicate her time to what meant most to her, her family.  Affectionately called by many names including Mawmaw, Aunt Jo, & Mama Jo, Joan was a mother figure to all who came to know her.  She loved cooking and was rarely seen without an apron.  Her love extended to her church family as well where she served as a Grand Lady in the Ladies Auxiliary, participated in the Women's Club, sang in the choir, and enjoyed being a CCD teacher.  She fought and survived breast cancer three times; the third time being privately treated as she did not want people to worry.

She was fiercely protective of the ones she loved and would give her last to help others.  On February 2, 2017 God reunited Joan with the love of her life on his birthday.  Additionally, her parents and one great-grandchild proceeded her in death.  She leaves behind to cherish her memory three children: Tony, Danny (Cheryl), & Jamie Fuselier, three siblings: Gladys Bush, Barbara Gouthier, & Brenda Metcalf (Terry); brother & sister in-law: Leon Fuselier (Kathy) & Elsye Edwards; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, her fur-baby Sassy, & a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
