Mr. John E. Nunley, after 83 years, "transferred to Church triumphant" on Tuesday morning, October 25, 2016 from the Jack C. Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center in Muskogee Oklahoma.
John Ershel Nunley was born November 12, 1932 to John Link Nunley and Annie Veo (Polite) Nunley in Idabel, Oklahoma. He was the baby of six children born in the family; Pearlivie (Slim), Mozell, Ellie, Albert Dorsey (AD), Veo, and also two nieces that were raised as his sisters, Dorothy Jean, and Virtle.
John grew up in Idabel, where he received is early education. He was also a graduate of Oklahoma State Tech in plumbing in 1955. John was employed at the United States Postal Service in Okmulgee from 1961 until his retirement in April of 1988. He had a total of 33 years of federal service.
He was baptized on April 16, 1967 at Eastside Baptist Church and was later ordained as a Deacon on April 1, 1978 under the leadership of T. Oscar Chappelle Jr. He joined St. Matthew Baptist in January 2002, where he attended until his health no longer permitted
He was married to the love of his life Violetta Foster, for 59 years, and to this union five children were born, Veronica Lewis (George), Bryan, Clyde(Juanita) all of Okmulgee, Alan (Jacqueline) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tonya James (Rick) of Carrollton, Texas.
Those who preceded him in death were his loving wife, parents, all siblings, one grandson Johnathan Nunley, and niece Virtle Rucker, who was raised with him.
Those left to cherish his memory; his five children; ten grandchildren, Tamiya Lewis, George Lewis Jr. (Tiffany), Steven Nunley (Scherrice), Tiffany McMullen (Marseilles), Alexandria Nunley, Alexander Nunley, Alexis Nunley, Kaila James, Mia James, and Taylor James; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The Final Salute to Deacon Nunley will commence on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. in the most holy sanctuary of the St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend McKinley Rice, Pastor will preside and Elder Alan Nunley, will deliver the Eulogy.
Burial will follow in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Okmulgee. You may visit him as he slumbers at the funeral home in Okmulgee on Friday from 12 Noon until 6:00 PM.
