IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Johnetha A.
Erskin
July 12, 1945 – September 12, 2022
On July 12, 1945, in Muskogee, Oklahoma a beautiful baby girl was born to proud parents, John Henry Garrett and Monett Oletha Garrett. They named their first-born Johnetha Antionette Garrett. Johnetha, who was better known as "Johnnye," grew up in Taft, Oklahoma, where she attended Taft public schools. She has two sisters, Gwendolyn Garrett and Andrea Garrett-Lambert; three brothers, Maurice Garrett, Archie Garrett, and Chebonnie Garrett; and two dearly loved nieces, Jacqueline Wooden (Anthony) of Muskogee, OK, and Tonya Garrett, of New York City, NY; Joyce Lee (Ronald, Jr.) of Chicago, IL, whom she loved as a daughter; and a very special friend to her and our family, Reginald Chisholm of Chicago, IL.
Johnetha married Ronald Lee Erskin of Muskogee, Oklahoma on December 27, 1961 from which five children were born: Veronica J. Perkins (Stanley) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Ronald L. Erskin, Jr. of Chicago, Illinois, Tony R. Erskin of Chicago, Illinois, Darryl L. Erskin (Tondrea) of Chicago, Illinois, and Cory E. Erskin (Andrea) of Chicago, Illinois.
Johnetha and her husband moved from Muskogee to Chicago, Illinois, in 1967 with their two kids, Veronica and Ronald. Although she lived in Chicago, she returned to the comfort and support of her Muskogee and Taft family in 1968 to give birth to her third child, Tony. Two more sons were later added to their union, Darryl and Cory, to complete the Erskin family.
In 1977, Johnetha began working as a teaching assistant for the Chicago Public School (CPS) system. As her teaching career progressed, she provided education to special-needs children. After 23 years of service, she retired from CPS in 2000. Johnnye had a passion for fashion, fishing, and traveling the world. She also enjoyed watching old black and white western movies and TV series.
As a first-born, Johnetha was considered the monarch of the family. She hosted family gatherings, instilled family values, and was a genuine example of unconditional love, leadership, and support. She was a Catholic with strong faith and belief in Christ.
Johnetha loved her family deeply and leaves to cherish her memories: four surviving children; a son-in-law; daughters-in-law; a brother, Archie Garrett of Taft, OK; a sister, Andrea Garrett-Lambert of Broken Arrow, OK; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents (John and Monett), husband (Ronald), son (Cory), a Sister (Gwendolyn) and brothers (Maurice and Chebonnie).
