Obituary

Katherine Gaines, affectionately referred to as "Miss Kat," joined her fellow Angels in the early morning hour of Saturday, May 20, 2006 from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"Miss Kat" was born on November 22, 1914 from the loving union of Wade and Ella Austin in Keystone, Oklahoma. She received her formal education at Begum School. As a young girl, her early childhood was spent in the Drumright and Shamrock communities. She joined Pleasant View Church in Stroud at an early age.

"Miss Kat" owned and operated Katherine's Cafe from 1952 until 1989, lovingly serving anyone whose path she crossed. She sold meals to local companies, including Miller Packing Company, Sapulpa Brick and Tils and Wickham Packing Company. Following the Tornado of 1963, she fed construction workers from Texas and Missouri, while they repaired damage to the city. She was also instrumental in the feeding and sheltering of workers involved in building the Keystone dam. No one left hungry, whether they could pay for it or not.

She met and married Grant Burns, who preceded her in death, and their union was blessed with three daughters. She then married Thomas Montgomery, who also preceded her in death and later married Modie Gaines, who preceded her in death. Katherine was also preceded in death by a daughter, Irene Jones and a grandson, William Burns, Sr.

She leaves to mourn her passing; her daughters, Dorean Sears and Bernice Burns, Sapulpa, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, Tracye [Tara] Burns, Largo, MD, Victor Jones, Sandy Ruching, Los Angeles, CA, Aaron Scott, Jr., April Burns, Sapulpa, OK, Tina Scott, Horace Scott, Sr., Christi Burns-Gibbs, Tulsa, OK, Wendell Scott and Stephen [Steve] Scott, Garland Texas; twenty-one great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren; along with a caravan of other relatives and friends.

The final hour will be on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. in the Calvary Baptist Church, 412 North 7th Street. Reverend Scott Gordon, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in North Heights Cemetery. You may visit "Miss Kat" on Wednesday from 12 Noon until 7 PM at the funeral home in Tulsa.
