Obituary

On February 10, 1946 in Bixby, Oklahoma a baby girl was born to Nellie Tolon and Willis Harris. They named their new baby girl Katie Mae. Katie receiver her formal education at Carver Middle School and Booker T. Washington High school and graduated from Liberty Mounds High School in 1964. She received her Dietary Manager's license at Tulsa Technology Center and graduated from Oklahoma State University-Okmulgee as a dietary technician. She was pursuing a career to become a Dietician.

While spending her life in Tulsa, she met and married John Houston Cohens on February 14, 1971. Their union was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Latasha. Katie, affectionately known as "Auntie" was employed at several nursing homes as a Dietary Supervisor. She loved to cook and she acquired a special desire for cooking and learning to cook various types of foods. She became well known for her famous "Buttermilk and Banana Crème" Pies. She was also a unique seamstress making many beautiful wedding gowns and prom dresses. Several family members, relatives, and friends began their career working under the direction of "Auntie."

The love Katie displayed to many people shined like the rays from sun. She took in many people in to her home and provided shelter and food for them. She also assisted in rearing other children, caring for them and treating them as her very own. Despite her illness, Katie fought a GREAT fight and continued to wok faithfully as the Usher Board President at Pinkard Chapel CME Church in Tullahassee, Oklahoma under the direction of her sister, Pastor Pansy Wallace until her health failed.

On March 16, 2008, God in his infinite wisdom looked around His garden and found an empty space and found a beautiful flower named "Katie" and placed her in that space. She will join her husband John, grandmother Sally, brother Secbon, and sister Rennetta Boyd who preceded her death and has awaited for her at Heaven's Gates to join them in their Heavenly home.

Remaining to cherish her precious memories: her daughter, LaTasha Carter, step-daughter Latonia Cruel and step-son Eric Woods, grandchildren: Ornita, Markena, Kevin, JR., Brooklynn, Houston, Kasey, LaJoya, and Jade, one great-grandchild, Azja, her parents: Nellie Hawkins, and Willis Harris, sisters: Mary and Donald Bryant, Rev.
