IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Knolah Jackson,
Sr.
September 25, 1924 – October 20, 2020
Knolah Jackson, Sr. was born September 25, 1924 to Reverend Emanuel Matthew Jackson, Sr. and Vannener (Williams) Jackson in Grayson, TX. Knolah, Sr. was born on a farm that produced cotton, wheat, fruits and vegetables. The farm was owned by a Black man who took to the family, giving him the name Knolah.
Knolah Sr. was drafted into the Navy and served from 1943-1946, during World War II. He trained in Maryland and went to the Philippines. During the war he fought, worked as a cook, walked guard and learned skills to become a barber. His rank was Steward's Mate 2nd Class, and he served with dedication.
Knolah Sr. met his soulmate Izenatta Porter in Dennison, TX while looking for a friend who was one of her brothers. Knolah and Izenatta married in October of 1949, and settled in Muskogee in April of 1953. Their union brought forth eight children. Knolah Sr. and Izenatta were married for 66 years until her death in February 2016.
Known to most as 'Jackson', Knolah Sr. worked in downtown Muskogee as a barber. He then opened Jackson's Barber Shop on Fairmont Street, becoming one Muskogee's well-loved and respected barbers. He cut hair for almost 60 years, barbering well into his 90s.
Family members who have departed and are welcoming Knolah Sr. into heaven are his wife Izenatta; sons James Sr., Knolah Jr., David; daughters Shirley and Barbara Gail—along with his mother, father, three brothers and one sister.
Those who remain and remember him deeply include his daughter Betty Toney (Glenn) of Dallas, TX; son Nathaniel Jackson, Sr. (Kathy) of Georgetown, TX, daughter Ida Jackson of Oklahoma City and daughter-in-law Pat Porter (widow of James Sr.), along with his nieces and nephews. Knolah Sr. was the father of four generations, all of whom will cherish his memory.
Proverbs 17:6 says, "Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers."
