Larry Wayne Owens was born on January 15, 1958, the son of Dorothy and Arthur Owens, Sr., in Columbus, Ohio. He received his education in the Columbus Public School System, where he graduated from Linden McKinley High School with the Class of 1976.
He was employed by Ohio State Hospital and later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was employed by Monte Cassino School System in Tulsa, before his health began to fail.
Larry met and married Cynthia Woods and from this union, two sons were born; Larry Owens, Jr., and Samuel Lamar Owens. Larry later pledged his love on February 7, 2000 to Loretta Owens.
Larry had a passion for football, basketball, swimming and playing dominoes. He was a dedicated Ohio State Fan. He was a certified swimmer and life guard for many years and enjoyed having a good time with his Ohio and Muskogee family and friends.
Larry grew up at the Mount Herman Baptist Church under Reverend S. R. Doughty, Sr. After moving to Muskogee, he united with the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Owens went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 26, 2015 from Muskogee, Oklahoma, surrounded by family and friends.
He leaves to lament his death; his loving and devoted wife, Loretta Owens; his two sons, Larry Wayne Owens, Jr., and Samuel Lamar Owens; a step-son, Travon Brooks; a step-daughter, Shakina Johnson; three grandsons, Landon Owens, Daelon Greenslade and Urijah Brooks; a granddaughter he called his own, Althea Reynolds; mother Dorothy Owens-Hill; his sisters, Tina Belcher and Kim Barbee; a sister-in-laws: Donna Sue Owens; Anita Johnson, and Delores Johnson, his brothers, Wayne Hill, Wiley [Traci] Hill, Darrell Hill, Larry Hill and Edwin Hill; mother in law Pearl Walker, his special friends, Stevie James and Jerry Washington; along with a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Farewell Tribute will be on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. in the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. His Pastor, Rev. David Ragsdale, Jr., will preside.
Burial will follow in the Booker T. Washington Cemetery in Muskogee.
