Lela Ruth Carter was born on April 25, 1929, in Corinth, Mississippi, to her devoted parents, Eules Nelson and Zena Nelson. Raised in a household that passionately worshipped the Lord, Lela dedicated her life to Him at an early age.

Throughout her childhood, she attended schools in Alcorn County until completing the 8th grade. Along with her three brothers, Lela enjoyed singing and they formed the Nelson Quartet during the 1930s, which sparked her passion for music.

Later, Lela relocated to Oklahoma, where she began her career in the healthcare sector, specifically assisting individuals who were unable to care for themselves. Although she found fulfillment in her work, she chose to retire in 1981 to devote more time to her children and numerous grandchildren.

Lela actively engaged in various hobbies, including crocheting, quilting, singing, and studying the scriptures.

Mrs. Lela Carter, in her 96th year of life, left this life for "Life Eternal" on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 with her loving family near her side.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mansell H. Carter; her children, Neil Carter, Marie Carter, Loretta Carter, Rayford Carter, and Wanda Carter; as well as her parents, Eules and Zena Nelson.

Those who will cherish her memory include her children, Billy (Linda) Carter, Ed (Joyce) Carter, and Elizabeth Downs; her brother, Bill Nelson; along with a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends

The Hour of Remembrance to reflect upon the life of Mrs. Carter will commence on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at High Noon in The People's Chapel of Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors Inc., of Muskogee.
