It all began in the community of Sunrise, Oklahoma, just north and east of Morris, Oklahoma, close to Twin Hills, when the loving union of Lonnie and Mary [Reagan] Whittaker was blessed with the third child in their family, their first son who they named Lonnie Whittaker, Jr.
Lonnie received his education in Okmulgee Public schools. He attended Banneker and ultimately graduated from Tradition Rich, Historic Dunbar High School with the Class of 1958. After completing high school, Lonnie moved to Kansas City, Missouri to seek employment. He worked for American Ingredients Company in Grandview, Missouri until his retirement. After retiring, Lonnie and his wife, Abbey returned to Okmulgee to care for his mom and enjoy the place he was most comfortable - home.
Mr. Whittaker enjoyed life to the fullest. He enjoyed traveling and visiting his family and friends. Lonnie was the eternal optimist and always had strong philosophies about life; " If you show love, you get love" or the simple term, "Enjoy!" And, that is the advice he passed along to all.
Lonnie had a strong faith in God and was a very faithful and active member of Saint Matthew Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend McKinley Rice. He served the Lord as a greeter and caretaker of the church facility. He will be missed by his loving family, friends and church members.
This past Sunday morning, Lonnie Whittaker, Jr., after "Four-score" years with us, made his move up the King's Highway to "Church Triumphant" for Sunday school with his Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by wife, Abbey Whittaker, his mother and Father, Lonnie and Mary Whittaker, Sr., his step-mother, Vidella Whittaker, and three sisters, Ann Jeanette Whittaker-Talbert, Marjorie Whittaker-Davis and Rose Whittaker Johnson.
He leaves in God's care to cherish his loving memory; a son, Robert W. Whittaker, Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters, Shundrekia Whittaker, Allen, Texas and Karla Richardson, Atlanta, Georgia; two granddaughters, Sidnie and McKinzi Jones, Allen, Texas; a grandson, Garrett Jones, Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers, Robert Whittaker [Rebecca] and Charles Whittaker, all of Okmulgee, Oklahoma; four sisters, Leatrice Andrews [Melvin], Debra Johnson, Darlene Whittaker and Forina Tyson [Terry], all of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a very special friend, Vera Biglow, with whom he loved spending time with, his best friend, John Collins, and his earthly Angel, Rhondoa Hammon; along with a caravan of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Lonnie's life will commence on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. in the most Holy sanctuary of the Saint Matthew Baptist Church. The Pastor, Reverend McKinley Rice will officiate.
You may visit Mr. Whittaker, as he slumbers in peaceful repose at the funeral home in Okmulgee on Friday from 12 Noon until 6:00 PM.
