On August 20, 1958, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Willia Rean and James K. Lowe welcomed into the world Marilyn Kay Lowe five minutes before her twin sister, Carolyn. Marilyn was the fourth of fifteen children, eight from Oklahoma and seven from California. Marilyn grew up in a loving, God-fearing household, where she learned early on the virtues of charity, sharing, patience, and grace. She was baptized at an early age at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, where she remained a faithful servant and church member until her passing. Marilyn enjoyed singing in church and listening to good gospel music.
Growing up, Marilyn was quiet and reserved with a sweet, bubbly personality, and she was a prankster. Marilyn loved her brothers and sisters; she was hardworking around the house and a natural caregiver to her younger siblings. Marilyn was affectionately called "Booga." Marilyn's early education was at Dunbar and Alcott Elementary, where she sang in the school choir, played the holiday bells, and loved horseback riding. She attended junior high school at Anderson Middle School and graduated with the class of 1977 at Central High School, where she enjoyed dance classes and home economics, which included cooking and sewing, two things she loved to do.
Marilyn became a mother at a young age, but had aspirations to go to college and travel. In the summer of 1977 after graduating from high school, she, her daughter Yashica, and her twin sister Carolyn, from whom she was inseparable, moved to California where she met the love of her life, Carl Davis McGill. Marilyn and Carl later married in 1981 and shortly after welcomed a second daughter, Lemika, into the world. During the marriage, she and her family traveled often and lived in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Wichita, Kansas; and Balch Springs, Texas. Marilyn and Carl's union lasted until her passing.
If you knew Marilyn, you know that she was an amazing cook. She loved to feed people and loved sharing and exchanging recipes with her sisters. She and Carl opened a BBQ restaurant, where she made a mean lemon pecan pie and delicious "come-back" baked beans. For over twenty years Marilyn worked as a dietician for Tulsa Public Schools and nineteen years for Zarrow Pointe at the Tulsa Jewish Retirement and Health Center, where she enjoyed working with and serving the elderly. Marilyn was a hard worker; she was a dedicated and very devoted employee until her health failed her.
Marilyn had a green thumb and loved doing yard work. She was an immaculate housekeeper and loved decorating her home and would travel to Texas to collect beautiful African artwork. Her home was the hub of the family, where there was always good eating, family fun, and lots of laughter. Her nieces and nephews loved her like a second mom, and she helped raise her youngest brother, Brett, and her niece, Tamela.
On Thursday, October 6, 2022, Marilyn transitioned from this life with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Harrison Lowe and Johneva Lowe; her maternal grandparents, Nealy Bee Gibson, Sr., and Clara Bell Gibson; her father,
James K. Lowe, Sr.; and her sister, Denise Viola Lowe-Bryant.
She leaves to cherish and continue her legacy: her husband of forty-one years, Carl Davis McGill; daughters, Yashica Lowe and Lemika McGill; mother, Willia Rean Lowe; siblings, Katherine Lowe-Parker (Norman), Katheleen Lowe, Harrison Lowe, Carolyn Lowe-Hudson,
Etta James Lowe-Barre' (Anthony, deceased), Carletta Lowe-Wallace (Daniel), James Lowe, Jr., Deidra Lowe, Stevie Lowe, Jolanda Lowe-Green (John), Marva Peters, Brett Lowe, Sr., and Christine Lowe; grandchildren, Diamond Momodu, Cayden McGriff, and Cierra Thornton; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
