Obituary

On January 22, 1931, our Father in Heaven blessed Samuel and Emma [Smith] Anderson with a beautiful little girl. Mary Lee Anderson was born in Bristow, Oklahoma, where she joined 3 brothers and 6 sisters.

When she was a young girl, Mrs. T. Grissom, a social worker with D.B. & O. in Taft, Oklahoma, visited the family and asked if she could take Mary home with her. Mary said that was the best thing that ever happened to her. She lived a blessed and prosperous life with Mother Lee and Mrs. Grissom.

Mary finished high school at Manual Training High School, with the Class of 1949 and began college at Langston University in the summer of 1949. She received a B.S. Degree in Education and graduted from Langston with the Class of 1953. She then began work on her Master's Degree at Oklahoma State University and completed that in one year.

Mary married her childhood friend, James Walker, but the marriage was dissolved after a few years. She began working for the Muskogee Public School system in 1954 and remained a faithful employee for over 30 years. She taught at Langston Elementary, Pershing, Cherokee and Sadler schools. She sold pickles to take her classes on field trips and became such a master teacher, she was employed to conduct workshops all over the state to teach teachers. Charles Pierce, one of her principals, praised her as one of the best teachers he had under his supervison. Students, teachers, parents and administration admired and respected her.

Mary met and married Michael George Wynn and they had a wonderful life until his death. His brother's children and family loved Mary as their own.

Mary was an active member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church for over fifty years. She served the Lord faithfully as President of the Senior Choir for thirty five years, and Vacation Bible School Director for more than thirty years. Often, there were more than 150 children attending this well organized, effective summer school. She was a great administrator, teacher and a caring person, but she was strict and had very high standards.

She also served her Zeta Phi Beta Sorority as President and a member for sixty years. Everyone looked to her for instruction and guidance and she never hesitated. She was an active member of the NAACP, the Muskogee Retired Teachers Association and a generous supporter of the building fund at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. Her favorite saying was "If I promise God I'm going to do something, nobody can keep me from doing it!" She also had a habit of telling others to look her in the eyes, as she was scolding them.

Mrs. Wynn was a member of the Ark of Faith, but her love was Mount Calvary Baptist Church. She endeared herself to as many people in Muskogee that they nicknamed her "Mother Wynn." She was always feeding people, sending money, flowers, calling them and giving them peaches. She also sent pecans to her relatives so they could enjoy the bountiful blessings of her yard. She was famous for telling everyone to "save your money and buy insurance!"

After 89 years with us, Mary Lee Wynn "joined the Master's Choir in Heaven" on Sunday morning, July 12, 2020 from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She leaves in God's care; her sister, Ann James, Gresham, Oregon; her sister-in-law, Val Wynn, Dallas, Texas; her God-sister, Dr. Virginia Schoats, and her God-daughters, Helen [Joe] Ingram, and her adopted niece, Jerri Stoutermire, all of Muskogee, Oklahoma; along with other nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends who will cherish and miss her precious spirit.

Her Celebratory Worship Service in her honor will commence on Saturday morning, July 18, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. in the Timothy Baptist Church, 5530 West Okmulgee Avenue.  Pastor Kelly Payne is the gracious host, and her Pastor, Reverend Gary Hall, Sr., will officiate.  Entombment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum
