Mrs. Mary K. Johnson, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, dozed into the peaceful rest of eternal slumber on Saturday morning, March 17, 2007 from Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Haskell, Oklahoma for over 20 years. Mary K. united with the First Missionary Baptist Church of Muskogee in 1967 and served as a faithful member fo 30 years. She later joined Little Rose Baptist Church and was a loyal member until her passing.
She graduated from Douglass High School in Wewoka, Oklahoma and graduated from Langston University with a Bachelors Degree in 1952. She did graduate studies in Social Work at Northeastern State University.
Mary K. was married to James Roy [J.R.] Johnson and this union produced three children. She later married Al Proutt , who preceded her in death, along with her parents and oldest brother, Robert Lee Delce.
Mary K., was one of teh first African-American women hired by the State as a Social Worker. She began her career at the Oklahoma State Training School for Negro Girls in Taft, Oklahoma, in 1952. She later worked at the State School for the Deaf, Blind and Orphaned [D.B.& O.]. After serving 34 years, she retired from teh Oklahoma Department of Human Services in 1986. She was a founding member of "The Brunch Bunch" in Muskogee, a group of ladies who networked to improve their communitiy. She was also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
She leaves a loving family to celebrate her life; daughter, Velma J. Huling [Bill], Dallas, Texas, a son, James C. Johnson [Yavette], Oklahoma City, and a daughter, Grace [GiGi] Johnson, Dallas, Texas; her brother, William Otis Delce, Clinton, Oklahoma, and a sister, Betty Whtie, Wewoka, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Pamela Huling-Jones [Dante], Melissa Kathryn Huling-Malonson [Kevin], Jeremy Roy Johnson [fianacee', Dante'] and Jason Alex Johnson; five great-granddaughters, Caitlyn and Lauryn Jones, Jaiah and Jastyn Johnson and Madison Malonson; along with a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
The farewell celebration will be on Friday, March 23, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. in the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. B. W. Noble, host Pastor and Rev. Paul S. Washington, Pastor of Little Rose Baptist Church, Officiating. Burial will follow in Lima Cemetery, Lima, Oklahoma.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 12 Noon to 5:30 PM at the funeral home, and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., will hold their memorial service from 6 PM to 6:30 PM at the Little Rose Baptist Church, 24th & Findlay streets, followed by the Wake from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
