Obituary

Charles A. and Luerenda [Hunter] Brown were blessed with a beautiful, smiling daughter on a gorgeous spring day. Named Marzetta, she was born in Brownsville Community, a settlement just outside of Wetumka, Oklahoma. This community was organized by her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Brown. The family eventually moved to Okmulgee in 1920 in search of better schools.

Marzetta attended Attucks and Banneker Elementary Schools and graduated from Historic Dunbar High School with the class of 1935. After graduation, she attended Langston University, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education and Art in 1940. Upon returning to Okmulgee, she began a 36 year teaching career, as a first grade and kindergarten teacher. She met the love of her life, J. D. Wesley at Langston University in 1943 and they were married by Reverend Walters in 1946.

Reverend J. P. Patterson baptized her at Eastside Baptist Church in Okmulgee in 1932 and she remained a very loyal member. She loved God and her church family. She served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Missionary Society, a member of the Vacation Bible School Team, Church Secretary and Chairperson of the Bulletin Board Committee.

Mrs. Wesley was an active church, civic and community leader until her health began to fail. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, volunteered at the Veteran's Hospital in Muskogee, a contributor to the Okmulgee YMCA and worked with the Red Cross Blood Bank.

Marzetta was a charter member of the Langston University Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and had served her local chapter as President and Financial Secretary. She attended every National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta until her health would no longer permit, several years ago. She was a true crimson and cream lady and a very loving "Delta Dear."

The youth of Okmulgee were encouraged by her to pursue higher educational goals and to let their lives stand for something. Her message to young people was to "always try your very best to apply yourself. Not only to please your teachers and parents, but do it for yourself. Become the best that you can be, and always strive for excellence."

Waiting to welcome her to Heaven; her parents, a sister, Ella Mae, three brothers, Velton, Herman and Charles, along with her loving, devoted son, Charles Fredrick.

The Angel of Mercy met Marzetta at her home on Monday evening, May 1, 2006, with her loving family and friends at her side.

She leaves in God's care; her devoted husband, J. D. Wesley, of the home; three sisters, Lillian Gree, Parkland, Florida, Odevia Field, East Orange, New Jersey and Barbara Player, Reston, Virginia; along with a caravan of nieces, nephews, cousins, students and friends.
