Mrs. Mattie Chaney, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, "took flight with Angels to thine place of rest" on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 from her home in Haskell, Oklahoma.
On April 12, 1937, Bennie & Mary Jane Gist celebrated the birth of a beautiful baby girl, Mattie Lee Gist. Mattie was the fourth of nine children.
At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior while attending Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Haskell, Okla. Mattie was raised in Haskell and attended Haskell Public Schools. She graduated with the class of 1955 from Booker T. Washington High School in Haskell and afterward attended Langston University.
Mattie met her husband, Charles C. Chaney, Sr., while in high school. They began a courtship that blossomed into holy matrimony on February 25, 1956, while attending Langston University; After Mattie and Charles married, they relocated to Tulsa. During this union, they had four beautiful children; Charles, Jr., Tangy, Rodney and Karen. Mattie was a great wife, mother and grandmother. She worked for and retired from American Airlines where she was one of the first two female A&P mechanics at American Airlines.
She leaves loving memories in the hearts of her family and friends who will miss her dearly. Mattie was preceded in death by her beloved parents (Bennie and Mary Jane Gist); one sister (Uthella), and 3 brothers (Julius, Sr., Arthur and June).
Those who remain to mourn her passing, yet celebrate her home going and continue her legacy, include husband Charles Chaney, Sr., four children: Charles Chaney, Jr., Tangy Smith, Rodney Chaney and Karen Hall (Lynn); eleven grandchildren: Tamara, Alysia, Kenya, Lil Hal, Timothy, Martel, Tony, Dee, Ashley, Crystal, Lil Rod and Whitney; five great grandchildren: Malik, Devin, Jachary, Mahkia and Jazz as well as one brother, four sisters and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The Celebration will commence on Saturday, December 17, 2011, At 1:00 PM, in the most Holy sanctuary of the Metropolitan Baptist Church of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Reverend Ray Owens, Senior Pastor will preside and her Pastor, Reverend Carl G. Morgan of Mount Zion Baptist Church of Haskell, will deliver the Eulogy.
You may visit her, as she slumbers in sweet repose at the funeral home in Tulsa on Friday from 10AM until 5PM. A wake will conclude the day from 5PM to 7PM.
